Prairie wins Marion baseball tourney

Cedar Rapids Prairie won both of its games at the Marion baseball tournament Saturday to claim first place in the three-team event.

The Hawks topped Marion, 6-2, and blanked Burlington, 3-0.

Marion gained a split in the tournament by trimming Burlington, 3-1.

Blake Viall, Drew Yanecek and JP Havel-Pisarik shared the pitching for Prairie in the 6-2 verdict against Marion. Jalen Rima and Tyler Nunemaker had two hits for the Hawks.

Maverick Miller had two hits for Marion against Prairie. John Carstensen pitched a complete game for the Indians.

Tyler Ellertson tossed a three-hitter for Marion in the 3-1 victory over Burlington. Bobby Vanderlind had three hits and two RBIs.

Prairie raised its record to 20-4. Marion is 16-10.

 

Marion girls split in Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN - Livvy Draves tossed a five-hitter as the Marion Indians nipped Colfax-Mingo, 2-1, at the Marshalltown softball tournament Saturday.

Marion dropped its second game Saturday to Lisbon, 2-0, to finish the tournament with a 3-1 record.

Draves did not allow an earned run in the 2-1 verdict against Colfax-Mingo. She struck out two batters and walked two. Madison Wilson led the offense by going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Maddie Knapp also drove in a run.

Marion collected only four singles in the 2-0 loss to Lisbon. Alicia Steepleton pitched a complete game for the Indians, but was the hard-luck loser. She allowed seven hits and struck out six batters.

Marion has a 15-10 record.

Marion wins pair of softball games

MARSHALLTOWN - The Marion High School softball team won both of its games at the Marshalltown Tournament Friday.

The Indians rolled by South Tama, 12-0, in four innings and trimmed Marshalltown, 6-5.

Sydney Nielsen went 3-for-4 with three RBIs against South Tama. Camryn Cannoy scored three runs and Madison Wilson had two RBIs. Alicia Steepleton tossed a two-hit shutout with four strikeouts and one walk.

Nielsen went 2-for-4 with two more RBIs against Marshalltown. Wilson scored twice. Steepleton got the victory in relief.

The victories lifted Marion to 14-9 for the season.

Hot Indians sweep Maquoketa in Wamac

MAQUOKETA - The Marion High School baseball team stayed hot Thursday night by sweeping a Wamac Conference doubleheader at Maquoketa, 5-0 and 4-1.

The Indians have won 8-of-9 games, raising their record to 14-9.

Marion got more good pitching Thursday night. Owen Carstensen tossed a three-hit shutout in the first game and Mitch Wiese allowed only three hits in the nightcap.

Tyler Ellertson had three hits for Marion in the first game. John Carstensen had two hits. Ellertson and Owen Carstensen had two RBIs.

John Carstensen, Bobby Vanderlind and Gage Kray had RBIs for Marion in the second game.

Maquoketa fell to 3-19.

 

Lions, Cougars placed in same substate

The dream of having four Metro baseball teams reach the Class 4A state tournament was dashed by the Iowa High School Athletic Association Thursday.

The IHSAA put No. 7 Linn-Mar and No. 9 Kennedy in the same substate, which means only one of them can make the state tournament. The Lions swept the Cougars in a conference doubleheader earlier this season and have the edge for the No. 1 seed in the substate.

Cedar Falls, Marshalltown, Waterloo East and Waterloo West are in Substate No. 3 with Linn-Mar and Kennedy.
