Marion splits with Mustangs in baseball

MOUNT VERNON - The Marion High School baseball team traded victories with the Mount Vernon Mustangs in a Wamac Conference doubleheader in Mount Vernon Tuesday.

Marion won the first game, 3-1, in eight innings. Mount Vernon took the nightcap, 12-2, in five innings.

David Kuhn had a two-run single in the top of the eighth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and boost Marion to the 3-1 victory in the opener. Kuhn drove in all three runs for the Indians. Owen Carstensen had two hits.

Brady Donohue of Marion and Luke Eldred of Mount Vernon both pitched complete games in the opener. Both pitchers scattered six hits in the duel.

Mount Vernon scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to win the nightcap by the 10-run rule. Mitch Wiese hit a solo home run for Marion.

The split left Marion at 13-9 overall and Mount Vernon at 11-9.

 

Marion softball team nips Springville

The Marion Indians rallied from an early 4-0 deficit and trimmed Springville, 6-5, in a prep softball game Friday at Marion.

Bayley Fuller, Alicia Steepleton, Camryn Cannoy and Shannon Sellers had two hits for Marion. Sellers collected two RBIs.

Steepleton pitched a complete game for the victory as the Indians raised their record to 12-9. Springville fell to 7-10.

Chrissy Hoogland hit a home run for Springville.

Marion softball splits with DeWitt Central

DEWITT - The Marion High School softball team split a Wamac Conference doubleheader at DeWitt Central Thursday.

DeWitt Central won the first game, 2-1. Marion rebounded with a 10-7 victory in the nightcap.

The split left the Indians with an 11-9 record. DeWitt Central is 3-8.

Camryn Cannoy had two hits for Marion in the first game. Alicia Steepleton pitched a complete game for the Indians and was the hard-luck loser in the 2-1 setback.

Sydney Nielsen went 2-for-3 with four RBIs for Marion in the nightcap. Haley Dullea was 3-for-5 and scored three runs. Maddie Knapp was 3-for-5 and scored twice. Cannoy and Shannon Sellers had two hits. Megan Glovik drove in two runs.

Marion Indians win pair of shutouts

The Marion Indians got strong pitching Thursday night and swept a Wamac Conference doubleheader from Anamosa, 2-0 and 6-0, at Marion.

The sweep lifted the Indians to 12-8. Anamosa fell to 5-13.

Mitch Wiese and Owen Carstensen combined for the shutout in the first game. Wiese got the victory and Carstensen collected a save.

Tyler Ellertson had two hits for Marion. Baylor Fish and David Kuhn had RBIs.

Gage Kray tossed 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts for the victory in the nightcap. Bobby Vanderland, Kuhn, Carstensen, Ellertson and Fish had RBIs. Vanderlind and Kuhn had two hits. Carstensen had a triple.

Marion sweeps Benton in baseball

VAN HORNE - The Marion High School baseball team swept a Wamac Conference doubleheader from Benton Community, 4-3 and 13-1, in Van Horne Wednesday.

The twin-killing lifted the Indians to 10-8 for the season.

Marion rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to win the opener. David Kuhn and John Carstensen had two hits for the Indians. Brady Donohue got the victory with six strikeouts.

Marion scored 11 runs in the first two innings of the nightcap to take control early. The game ended after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Gage Kray, Bobby Vanderlind, Mitchell Wiese, Maverick Miller and Baylor Fish had two hits. Weise drove in five runs and Carstensen had three RBIs.

Kuhn got the victory in the nightcap. He scattered four hits and had seven strikeouts.
