Marion golfers trim Independence

Alex Gaffney grabbed medalist honors with a 42 Thursday as the Marion Indians nipped Independence, 172-175, in a Wamac Conference dual meet at Gardner Golf Course.

MARION: Alex Gaffney 42, Ian Kelly 43, Jack Serbousek 43, Tyler Ellertson 44.

 

Marion boys clipped by Bobcats

EPWORTH - Caleb Smith and Nate Meister enjoyed a good day for the Marion High School tennis team Thursday, but it was not enough to prevent a 6-3 loss to Western Dubuque in a Wamac Conference meet in Epworth.

Smith and Meister won their matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and combined for a tight victory at No. 1 doubles.

Smith defeated Alex Meyer, 10-3, at No. 1 singles. Meister topped Beau Kramer, 10-3, at No. 2 singles. They combined for a 10-8 verdict in doubles.

Marion boys run 2nd at Vinton

VINTON - Colton Forster, Jeremy Fopma and Chase Bruns won individual titles Thursday to help the Marion Indians place second at the Vinton-Shellsburg Invitational track meet.

Vinton-Shellsburg won the meet with 154 points. Marion finished second in the seven-team field with 121 points.

Forster captured the 1600 (4:37.02), Fopma claimed the 3200 (9:55.29) and Bruns took the shot put (47-0). Marion also won the shuttle hurdle relay (1:01.55).

Marion got second-place showings from Hunter Reifschneider in the 1600 (4:45.12), the 4x100 relay (45.25) and the 4x200 relay (1:34.41).

Bach paces Indians at Marion Invy

Maddie Bach of Marion High School captured the 1500 and 3000 meter runs Thursday to help the Indians finish second in their own Marion Invitational at Thomas Park.

North Linn won the team championship with 90 points in a tight race with Marion (87), West Delaware (86) and Benton Community (84) in an 11-team field.

Bach took the 1500 in 5:07.60 and claimed the 3000 in 11:02.23.

Mahlia Brown won the shot put for Marion with a toss of 38 feet, 5 1/2 inches. The Indians got second-place finishes from Sydney Brase in the 100 hurdles (16.85) and Breanna Smith in the shot put (36-3 1/2).

Kelly, Serbousek pace Marion golfers

MAQUOKETA - Ian Kelly and Jack Serbousek fired rounds of 78 Wednesday to lead the Marion Indians at the Maquoketa Invitational at the Maquoketa Country Club.

Marion finished third in the team standings behind West Delaware and DeWitt Central.

Clayton Larsen of West Delaware took medalist honors with a 71.
