Smith, Crawford, Saints make state bowling

Bre Smith of Marion, Sam Crawford of Linn-Mar and the entire Xavier boys bowling team have qualified for the state meets in Des Moines next week.

Smith rolled a 360 series for the Marion Indians Tuesday and won the Class 2A state qualifier in Waverly.

Crawford bowled a 481 series for the Linn-Mar Lions at the Class 3A qualifier in Marshalltown and qualified for the state meet as an at-large participant.

The Xavier Saints captured the Class 2A qualifier in Clinton and posted the second-best qualifying score in the state Tuesday with a 3,234 tally. Mount Pleasant had the top score at 3256. Lewis Central, Fort Dodge, Sioux City North, Oelwein and Des Moines Hoover also qualified for the Class 2A state meet.

Brett Young of Xavier qualified for the Class 2A individual state tournament with a 458 series.

The Class 2A state meet will be held Tuesday, Feb. 24 at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines. The Class 3A state meet will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at Plaza Lanes.

This is the first year for a three-class state meet.

 

DeWitt Central buries Marion, 47-22

DEWITT – The Marion boys basketball team trailed 15-2 after the first quarter and never got rolling in a 47-22 loss to DeWitt Central on Tuesday.

Devin Quinn scored seven points to lead the Indians as they finished the regular season 14-7. Craig Engle, Marion's top scorer, is sidelined with a bad ankle.

Logan Sheppard scored 11 points for DeWitt Central (10-11).

Bre Smith wins Metro Spotlight Award

Marion junior Bre Smith is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Smith is one of the top bowlers in the state for the Marion Indians and she enjoyed a fantastic day on Friday at Cobra Lanes in Farley in a Wamac Conference meet against Western Dubuque.

She rolled games of 258 and 230 for a 488 series, which is the sixth-best series in the state this season. Her 258 matched the 13th-best single game of the season.

Smith bowls 488 as Marion girls fall

FARLEY – Bre Smith led all scorers with a 258 game and a 488 series as the Marion girls bowling team suffered a 2,733 to 2,590 loss to Western Dubuque on Friday at Cobra Lanes.

The Indians finished 3-9 in the regular season.

Mariah Kluesner had a 414 series for Western Dubuque (10-1).

Marion (2,590): Bre Smith 258-230=488, Aleann Romo 193-164=357, Alexis Smith 135-202=337, Alyssa Rose 126-132=258, Ashley Ohl 149-116=265.

Western Dubuque (2,733): Mariah Kluesner 223-191=414, Britney Neyen 188-185=373, Lisa Schroeder 188-183=371, Madison Theisen 189-172=361, Kayla Horsfield 145-190=335, Brooke Kluesner 164-160=324.

Marion: 1,705+885=2,590.
Western Dubuque: 1,854+879=2,733.

Western Dubuque boys spank Marion bowlers

FARLEY – Zach Prucha had a 244 game and a 427 series as the Marion boys bowling team lost to Western Dubuque 3,229 to 2,878 Friday at Cobra Lanes.

The Indians finished 7-5 in the regular season.

Blake Nadermann rolled a 504 series to lead Western Dubuque (10-1).

Marion (2,878): Zach Prucha 244-183=427, Nate Meister 196-204=400, Nick Wheeler 224-171=395, Brandan Bradley 226-162=388, Dylan Nash 169-165=334, Dakota Timmerman 136-157=293.
