No. 1 Williamsburg boys handle Marion

WILLIAMSBURG – The Marion boys basketball team gave the Class 3A top-ranked Williamsburg Raiders a challenge, but lost 43-36 Friday at Williamsburg.

The Indians (12-6) trailed by just one point, 20-19, at halftime and they held the Raiders (16-1) to 12 field goals in the game.

But Williamsburg pulled away in the second half and shot 16-of-22 from the free-throw line. Marion shot just 5-of-10.

Jacob Manderscheid scored nine points and Craig Engle added eight for the Indians.

Smith leads Marion girls in loss

INDEPENDENCE – Alexis Smith led the Marion girls bowling team in a 2,230 to 2,175 loss to Independence with a 185 game and a 373 series Friday at Lucky 10 Lanes.

The Indians fell to 2-8.

Lainie Kuper had a 370 series for the Mustangs.

Marion (2,175): Alexis Smith 195-178=373, Bre Smith 150-174=324, Ashley Ohl 134-130=264, Aleann Romo 104-147=251, Alyssa Rose 112-98=210.

Independence (2,230): Lainie Kuper 199-171=370, Sammie Brown 142-184=326, Jesica Trussell 151-154=305, Leah Rosaur 122-134=256, Jacey Schwarting 139-107=246, Lizzie Lake 118-114=232.

Marion – 1,422-753=2,175.

Marion boys slam Independence bowlers

INDEPENDENCE – Nick Wheeler had a 219 game and Zach Prucha rolled a 382 series as the Marion boys bowling team topped Independence 2,472 to 2,176 Friday at Lucky 10 Lanes.

The Indians improved to 6-4.

Tony Lopez led the Mustangs with a 344 series.

Marion (2,472): Zach Prucha 214-168=382, Nick Wheeler 219-161=380, Dakota Timmerman 157-184=341, Nate Meister 130-178=308, Dylan Nash 95-193=288, Brandan Bradley 122-132=254.

Independence (2,176): Tony Lopez 144-200=344, Tom Finnigan 148-169=317, Ryan Peyton 143-156=299, Tyler Hare 156-100=256, Tayt Johnson 107-136=243, Matt Bolton 89-147=236.

Xavier girls climb to 7th in 4A

The Xavier girls basketball team continued its climb in the Class 4A rankings by jumping from No. 9 to No. 7, the IGHSAU announced Thursday.

The Saints have compiled a 13-5 record, primarily against Class 5A competition.

The Marion Indians (16-4) remained 13th in the Class 4A poll. The Kennedy Cougars (13-5) stayed No. 8 in the 5A rankings.

The top-ranked teams are Waukee in 5A, Harlan in 4A, Mediapolis in 3A, Unity Christian in 2A and Burlington Notre Dame in 1A.

Marion pins Davenport West, 45-26

Kyle Van Meter, Aaron Cleppe, Caleb Conway and Colin Conway had pins Thursday night as the Marion Indians flattened Davenport West, 45-26, in a prep wrestling meet at Marion.

Van Meter got his pin in 34 seconds and Caleb Conway stuck his opponent in 40 seconds.

Dalton Gardner won an 8-1 decision for Marion.
