Smith scores 12 to lead Indians in loss

EPWORTH – The Western Dubuque girls basketball jumped to a 15-5 lead to open the game and beat Marion 60-49 Tuesday.

Caitlin Smith had 12 points to lead the Indians, Amanda Sahm added 10 points, and Michalyn Moore and Chloe Rice each had eight points.

Rose Simon-Ressler had 17 points to lead Western Dubuque (2-0).

Marion fell to 1-1.

Metro volleyball players rake in honors

Nine high school volleyball players from the Metro area have been named to the all-state and all-district teams by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.

Alyssa Thomas and Abby Phillips of Marion were named first team all-state in Class 4A. Amanda Sahm of Marion was named second team all-state. Kayla Torson of Xavier and Isabella Sade of Marion received honorable mention in Class 4A.

Amanda Ollinger of Jefferson was named second team all-state in Class 5A. Anna Fluent of Kennedy, Sarah Renner of Linn-Mar and Kate Busswitz of Prairie received honorable mention in Class 5A.

The same nine players were named to the all-district teams.

Thomas, Sade, Phillips, Sahm and Torson were named all-district on the Class 4A Northeast squad. Busswitz, Renner, Ollinger and Fluent were named all-district on the Class 5A East team.

 

DeWitt Central girls stop Marion

The Marion girls bowling team lost to DeWitt Central 2,327 to 2,156 Tuesday at the Cedar Rapids Bowling Center.

Bre Smith led the Indians with a 385 series. Shelby Carrier led DeWitt Central with a 393 series.

DeWitt Central (2,327): Shelby Carrier 204-189=393, Bailey Walker 172-181=333, Abbi Coble 187-123=310, Katie Hall 123-134=257, Veronica Weigandt 121-113=234, Amber Meyer 104-127=231.

Marion boys beat DeWitt Central

Nate Meister rolled a 408 series to lead the Marion boys bowling team to a 2,913 to 2,782 win over DeWitt Central on Tuesday at the Cedar Rapids Bowling Center.

Karson Smith led all scorers with a 456 series for DeWitt Central.

Marion girls beat DeWitt Central, 50-28

Amanda Sahl scored 15 points to lead the Marion girls basketball team to a season-opening win over DeWitt Central on Tuesday in Marion, 50-28.

Chloe Rice had 11 points and Michalyn Mohr added 10 as the Indians shot 21-of-25 from the free-throw line, compared to 7-of-12 for DeWitt Central.

MARION (50): Peyton 0 0-0 0, Rice 3 4-4 11, Smith 3 2-4 10, Sahm 4 7-8 15, Mohr 2 6-7 10, Laube 1 2-2 4. Totals 13 21-25 50.

DeWITT CENTRAL (28): Roling 0 0-0 0, Saunders 1 1-2 3, McNamara 1 1-2 3, Brainerd 4 5-6 14, Cornelius 1 0-0 2, Meland 2 0-0 6, Kuehl 0 0-0 0, Kinney 0 0-2 0. Totals 9 7-12 28.
