Prairie High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

No. 12 Prairie knocks off Saints

The 12th-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie volleyball team defeated Xavier, 25-18, 25-15, 24-26, 25-20, in a Mississippi Valley Conference match at Xavier Tuesday night.

Kate Busswitz collected 19 kills and six blocks for the Hawks. Megan Oldenburger went 22-for-22 on her serves and had 10 kills, three aces and two blocks. Kenzie Soeken finished with eight kills and four blocks.

Kendra Gaskill provided 40 assists and went 20-for-21 on her serves with two aces for Prairie. Kristin Wahlert had 14 digs and went 14-for-14 on her serves.

Hawks a winner in Bliss' debut

Mark Bliss' first quarter as Prairie's head football coach didn't go all that well.

But the final three of his first game were nothing but pure bliss for the first-year coach.

Bliss' Hawks fell behind Linn-Mar 10-0 and were in danger of falling down 13-0 late in the quarter as the Lions lined up for a field goal attempt.

Martavian Borseth broke through and blocked Alexy Boehm's 43-yard attempt and it was a different game from that point on.

“That was huge,” Bliss said. “Absolutely huge. It switched the field and gave us the field position in which we could go down and score.”
