Rima shines asPrairie boys take 2nd

WATERLOO – Prairie junior Jalen Rima was named the Mississippi Division Athlete of the Year as the Hawks finished second at the divisional meet Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.

Rima won the 200 and 400-meter dashes. Teammate Tysen VanDraska took top honors in the 1600 and 800. He was also on the winning 4 x 800 relay.

Dubuque Hempstead won the team title with 139 points, six better than Prairie. Washington finished third with 103 points while Xavier was fifth with 57.

Other Prairie winners included Jake Moore in the 3200 and Trevor Northrup in the 100, where he edged out Rima at the tape.

Washington’s Isaiah Nimmers won the 400 hurdles. The Warriors also won three relays - the shuttle-hurdle, the 4x100 and 4x400.

Prairie’s Bill Schwartz was named the divisional coach of the year.

No.7 Prairie boots No.3 City High

Logan Rinderknecht and Seth Rinderknecht scored two goals apiece Wednesday night as the seventh-ranked Prairie Hawks shut out No. 3 Iowa City High, 4-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference soccer match at Prairie.

Alec Balta pitched the shutout in goal for Prairie. Steve Fritz had an assist.

Prairie raised its records to 9-1 overall and 7-1 in the league.

Here is the updated report through Wednesday:

SCOTT SCHEBLER (CR Prairie), Oklahoma City, OF, Triple-A, Pacific Coast League (Dodgers): Schebler went 0-for-3 Wednesday in a 4-3 loss to New Orleans. He hit sixth in the lineup and played center field. Schebler is hitting .218 (17-for-78) with 10 runs, three doubles, five home runs, 10 RBIs, 12 walks, 19 strikeouts and two stolen bases.

CHAD CHRISTENSEN (CR Washington), Fort Myers, OF, High-A, Florida State League (Twins): Christensen did not play Wednesday in a 9-0 victory over Bradenton. He is hitting .250 (21-for-84) with eight runs, four doubles, one home run, seven RBIs, eight walks, 21 strikeouts and two stolen bases.

JON KELLER (CR Xavier), Frederick, P, High-A, Carolina League (Orioles): Keller did not pitch Wednesday against Winston-Salem. The game was suspended in the fifth inning due to rain with Frederick trailing, 3-2. They will finish the game Thursday. Keller has a 1-2 record and 3.63 ERA.

   

Prairie girls kick City High

IOWA CITY - MaKenzie Serbousek and Cayla Renwick scored unassisted goals Tuesday as Cedar Rapids Prairie blanked Iowa City High, 2-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference soccer match in Iowa City.

Serbousek leads Prairie with 19 points this season. The Hawks have a 6-2 record.

 

Caro sisters pace Prairie to victory

IOWA CITY - Vale Caro and Magui Caro won their singles matches Tuesday to help Prairie clip Iowa City West, 8-1, in a Mississippi Valley Conference tennis meet in Iowa City.

Vale Caro won 10-3 at No. 1 singles. Her sister Magui prevailed 10-6 at No. 2 singles.

Shannon Costigan, Anna Postnikov and Michelle Grenn also won their singles matches for the Hawks.
