Washington High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Gorman wins Metro Spotlight Award

Reagan Gorman of Washington is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Gorman, a freshman, finished in second place at the 31st Prairie Invitational cross country meet Saturday morning. She covered the 5 kilometer course in 19 minutes, 38 seconds in her first varsity race for the Warriors. She trailed Iowa City West junior Gabby Skopec by 12 seconds.

Gorman stands only 5-foot-2 and weighs about 85 pounds, but she proved that size does not matter in distance running. She dominated her middle school races and has already stamped herself as one of the top runners in the state.

Tiny Gorman makes big splash

Reagan Gorman stands out in a crowd of runners, but not because of her physical stature.

It's her talent, not her size.

"I'm 5-2," the Cedar Rapids Washington freshman said Saturday morning with a shy smile, "and I weigh about 85 or 90."

Good things come in small packages.

Gorman made a quick name for herself Saturday by finishing in second place out of 127 runners at the 31st Prairie Invitational cross country meet.

Iowa City West junior Gabby Skopec won the 5K race in 19 minutes, 26 seconds. Gorman placed second in 19:38 and Marion senior Maddie Bach took third in 19:43.

Iowa high school girls are running five kilometers for cross country races this year instead of the traditional 4K, making their events the same length as the boys.

"I like it," said Gorman. "I'm not very good at sprints, so it's nice."

Warriors escape Jeff's upset bid

Cedar Rapids Washington fullback Tavion Stewart had carried the ball only once all day when he took a simple handoff in the fourth quarter and saw nothing but daylight between him and the end zone far away.

He had one thought as he raced 75 yards to paydirt.

"Don't stop running. Keep going. Don't slow down," he said.

Stewart's long gallop snapped a 14-14 tie and helped the Warriors beat Jefferson, 27-14, in the season opener Saturday afternoon at Kingston Stadium.

The cross-town rivals were supposed to play Friday night, but a severe thunderstorm sent everyone home early and made the teams wait another day to knock heads.

Washington was ranked as high as No. 2 in some preseason polls after playing for the Class 4A state title last year, but the Warriors had their hands full for three quarters against a team that finished with a 4-6 record last season.

Xavier cancels game; 3 others postponed

None of the high school football games that were scheduled for the Metro area were played Friday night due to the heavy thunderstorms and lightning that passed through the area.

Xavier High School canceled its home game against Dowling Catholic. The game will not be rescheduled. Dowling is unable to make another round trip from West Des Moines on Saturday for a possible makeup date.

The other three games in the Metro area were postponed until Saturday.

Washington will face Jefferson at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kingston Stadium.

Prairie will play Linn-Mar at 5 p.m. Saturday at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Marion will host Mount Vernon at 7 p.m. Saturday at Thomas Park.
