Washington High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Lions, Cougars placed in same substate

The dream of having four Metro baseball teams reach the Class 4A state tournament was dashed by the Iowa High School Athletic Association Thursday.

The IHSAA put No. 7 Linn-Mar and No. 9 Kennedy in the same substate, which means only one of them can make the state tournament. The Lions swept the Cougars in a conference doubleheader earlier this season and have the edge for the No. 1 seed in the substate.

Cedar Falls, Marshalltown, Waterloo East and Waterloo West are in Substate No. 3 with Linn-Mar and Kennedy.

Puk, Gators ousted at World Series

OMAHA - A.J. Puk and the Florida Gators saw their baseball season come to an end at the College World Series Saturday night with a 5-4 loss to Virginia.

Puk, a 6-foot-7 left-hander from Cedar Rapids Washington, did not pitch for Florida in the game. He was the losing pitcher in a 1-0 setback to Virginia earlier in the CWS on Monday.

Virginia will face Vanderbilt in the championship round of the College World Series in a rematch of last year's finals. Vandy beat Virginia for the NCAA title last year. The best-of-3 series begins Monday.

Puk finished his sophomore campaign with a 9-4 record and 3.81 ERA, with 104 strikeouts in 78 innings. Baseball experts think his performance against Virginia in the College World Series on Monday boosted his stock for the 2016 Major League draft next June.

Florida finished the year with a 52-18 record.

Puk is hard-luck loser for Florida

OMAHA - A.J. Puk pitched a strong game for the Florida Gators in the College World Series Monday night, but the Cedar Rapids Washington grad was the hard-luck loser.

Puk was charged with one run in 5 1/3 innings as the Gators lost to Virginia, 1-0, in the second round of the College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.
