Pinckney retiring as Wash track coach

Bill Pinckney is retiring as the boys track coach at Cedar Rapids Washington after 19 years and two state titles.

Pinckney said Maurice "Mo" Blue will become the head coach after this season. Pinckney and Blue have been serving as co-head coaches for several years.

Pinckney, 62, has been an educator for 26 years.

"It's time for me to be done," he said Friday night after the Wilkinson Relays at Kingston Stadium. "I have a lot of things I want to do. I'm looking forward to it."

Washington won back-to-back state titles in 2009 and 2010. "We were loaded. It was so much fun," Pinckney said.

He said the state championships were the highlights of his career. "And the kids coming back," he remarked. "I love to communicate with them. That's the biggest thrill for me."

The Warriors have been rebuilding the track program the past few years and have some promising young athletes on the squad.

"Maurice is going to do a great job," said Pinckney. "The kids are in great hands."
