Warriors earn shot at Iowa City West

The Cedar Rapids Washington players and coaches aren’t the only ones who think they can bump off top-ranked and undefeated Iowa City West in the Class 4A substate finals this Tuesday at the U.S. Cellular Center.

“West for a long time has played at a different level than, really, the rest of the state,” said long-time Burlington Coach Jeff Bloomer after watching his undermanned Grayhounds get pummeled by the Warriors, 62-39, Friday night.

“We all know that," he said. “But Washington has a lot of length and a lot of athleticism. When you have a combination of those two things, you can pose problems for anyone.

“They’re a tough team. They’ll be hard for anybody to matchup against.”

Always-upbeat Washington Coach Adam Sanchez knows it will be a tall task to upset a 22-0 Trojan juggernaut that has steamrolled nearly every team in its path this year. West dumped the Warriors, 68-46, in their fourth game of the season back in mid-December.

No.8 Lions earn date at No.6 SE Polk

The eighth-ranked Linn-Mar girls basketball team cruised by Cedar Rapids Washington, 62-28, in the Class 5A regional semifinals at Linn-Mar Saturday night.

The Lions (16-7) will play at sixth-ranked Southeast Polk (16-6) in the regional finals Tuesday night in a showdown for a trip to the state tournament.

Linn-Mar built a 35-14 lead over the Warriors at halftime and never looked back. Amanda Ollinger led a balanced scoring attack with three 3-pointers and 14 points. Kamryn Finley scored 13 points and Olivia Montague had 11.

Joniqua Clark and Kandis O'Donnell scored seven points apiece for the cold-shooting Warriors (13-9). Washington shot 1-for-17 on 3-pointers and was 9-for-39 overall from the field.

Wash boys earn piece of division title

Jared Printy scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Washington boys basketball team beat Dubuque Senior, 50-47, Thursday at Washington and clinched a share of the Mississippi Division title in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

The Warriors trailed 14-7 after the first quarter, but they cut the deficit to 25-24 at halftime. Washington pulled ahead with a 14-6 run in the third quarter and held on down the stretch for the win.

Maurice Arrington added 10 points with four assists for Washington (12-9). Hunter Strait dished out five assists. Printy hit four 3-pointers.

Luke McDonnell, who has committed to Northern Iowa, scored 23 points with eight rebounds for the Rams (11-10). Jayden Davis had nine points and 11 rebounds.

Printy’s 24 points lead Wash boys

DUBUQUE – Jared Printy made four 3-pointers and scored 24 points to lead the Washington boys basketball team in an up-tempo 82-79 win over Dubuque Wahlert on Tuesday.

Hunter Strait scored 14 points and dished out six assists for the Warriors (11-9). Keegan Moore scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds.

Maurice Arrington contributed 13 points with nine rebounds. Drew Hoeger scored 10 points with four assists.

Cordell Pemsl paced the Golden Eagles (12-8) with 25 points. Josh Carter scored 18 points with 13 rebounds.
