9 entering Washington Hall of Fame

Cedar Rapids Washington will induct nine new members into the Warrior Athletic Hall of Fame Friday.

Mike Sandy, Kevin Puk, Evonne Butikofer, David Kummer, Maurice Cantrell, BJ Kolsrud, Barney O'Donnell, Hunter Kennedy and Rich Struve will be honored at a program that begins at 4:30 in the Washington cafeteria. They will be introduced between games of Washington's basketball doubleheader against Kennedy Friday night.

Sandy (1967) was a two-time state champion in swimming and helped the Warriors win three state team championships.

Puk (1988) was an all-state football player and the Defensive MVP of the 1988 Shrine Bowl. He also participated in basketball and track at Washington and played football at Stanford.

Butikofer (1999) earned 15 varsity letters at Washington in softball, volleyball, basketball and track. She was a member of the rowing team at the University of Iowa.

Arrington wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Washington senior Maurice Arrington is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Arrington, a 6-foot-7 center, has averaged 17.3 points and 6.8 rebounds in his last four games for the surging Washington basketball team. The Warriors have won three straight Mississippi Valley Conference games, raising their records to 8-7 overall and 6-4 in the league.

Arrington has scored 16, 16, 18 and 19 points in his last four games for his most productive stretch of the season. He's also grabbed six, six, eight and seven rebounds in those contests to help the Warriors.

O’Donnell leads Wash girls with 19

Kandis O’Donnell led the Washington girls basketball team with 19 points as the Warriors beat Muscatine 53-42 Saturday at Washington.

Washington jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the first quarter and held on to win. Alli Semrau added 10 points for the Warriors (11-7).

Annabel Graettinger scored 24 points for the Muskies (8-9).

Xavier girls ignite late against Wash

The Class 4A ninth-ranked Xavier girls basketball team outscored Washington 25-6 in the fourth quarter and beat the Warriors 66-50 Friday at Xavier.

Washington led 34-24 at halftime thanks to a 21-10 second quarter, but scored the Warriors scored just 16 points in the second half.

Lizzy Bailey scored 16 points for Xavier (14-5). McKenna Andersen added 12 points and Lexi Noonan chipped in 10.

Kandis O’Donnell scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Washington (10-7).

Prairie boys edge Washington by 44 pins

Matthew Gallaro posted a 245 game and a 449 series to lead the Prairie boys bowling team in a tight 2,946 to 2,902 win over Washington on Friday at Lancer Lanes.

Bryan Cline had a 249 game and a 431 series for the Warriors, who won the Baker round 990 to 976, but couldn’t catch the Prairie Hawks.

Prairie (2,946): Matthew Gallaro 245-204=449, Nick Moffitt 198-189=387, Zach Zimmermann 181-183=364, Lucas Gallaro 188-158=346, Walker Hunt 150-194=344, Sawyer Hanson 212-212=424.

Washington (2,902): Bryan Cline 182-249=431, Chris Schuttloffel 235-184=419, John Taylor 160-216=376, Gabe Wedel 190-159=349, Zach Nading 139-198=337, Donovan Trimble 174-151=325.

Prairie: 1,970-976=2,946.
