Valley boys topples Washington 110-60

Nick Saulnier and Jared Thorson each won two events, but the eighth-ranked West Des Moines Valley boys swimming team hammered No. 8 Washington 110-60 Saturday at Washington.

Saulnier won the 200- and 500-yard freestyles in 1 minute, 47.15 seconds and 4:53.68, respectively, for the Warriors. Thorson won the 50 freestyle (22.49) and 100 butterfly (53.25).

Wash girls defeated by Hempstead

DUBUQUE - Jessica Brown popped in four 3-pointers and scored 24 points Friday night as Dubuque Hempstead topped Washington, 54-43, in a Mississippi Valley Conference basketball game in Dubuque.

Allie Semrau led Washington (4-6) with 12 points.

Hempstead paraded to the foul line and outscored the Warriors at the charity stripe, 23-6.

Christensen rolls 404 for Wash girls

Shania Christensen claimed top individual honors for the Washington girls bowling team Friday with a 404 series in a dual meet against Waterloo East at Lancer Lanes.

Waterloo East got a 403 series from Leah Frost and won the meet, 2737 to 2172.

Waterloo East: Leah Frost 225-178=403, Olivia Ferrie 165-163=328, Trisa Edler 158-188=346, Alissa Claasen 184-179=363, Josie Jacobs 222-156=378, Ashley Cary 146-172=318.

Wash boys fade in 2nd half

The Washington boys led 35-15 at halftime, but struggled in the second half and lost to Dubuque Hempstead 62-54 Friday at Washington.

The Warriors dominated in the first half, going on a 21-9 run in the second quarter. But Hempstead out-scored Washington 19-7 in the third quarter and 28-12 in the fourth.

Keegan Moore had 13 points and 11 rebounds for Washington (2-5), and Jared Printy had 10 points.

Avery Butler had 24 points and 13 rebounds for Hempstead (6-1), and Robert Duax had 14 points.

DUBUQUE HEMPSTEAD (62): McDonough 3 2-2 8, Rindfleisch 3 2-4 9, Paulsen 3 2-2 9, Duax 4 5-7 14, Butler 7 7-9 24, Bitter 0 0-0 0. Totals 20 18-24 64.

Wash grapplers pinned by Wahlert

Dubuque Wahlert collected five pins Thursday night and flattened Cedar Rapids Washington, 69-9, in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual meet at Washington.

The shorthanded Warriors forfeited six of 14 bouts, giving Wahlert 36 free points.

Patrick Reirden collected a pin for Washington at 285 pounds. Matt Ackerman won a 3-0 decision at 152.
