Xavier High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Saints hope to finish job in 4A finals

Sean Ickes remembers the pep assembly. Colton Turner remembers the swift bus ride to Cedar Falls. Logan Clarahan remembers his butterflies. Matt Nelson remembers the noise in the UNI-Dome.

"It was loud at the Dome," Nelson said. "It was really loud last year."

It will get loud again Friday night when the fourth-ranked Xavier Saints (12-1) face top-ranked West Des Moines Dowling (13-0) in the all-Catholic school finals of the Class 4A playoffs.

Schulte pays tribute to his late father

Xavier Coach Duane Schulte rarely shows any emotion on a football field. He's humble, low-key, devout in his religious beliefs, a strong family man and quick to credit others.

In many ways, he sounds like his father.

Greg Schulte died this past summer at 82. He and his wife, Jean, were married for 60 years and had nine children. "They were rock-solid together," Schulte said this week.

Greg Schulte, a farmer for many years, never went to high school. His formal schooling ended after the eighth grade, but his knowledge extended well beyond any classroom.

Saints lose Andersen to torn ACL

McKenna Andersen, who helped the Xavier Saints win the Class 4A basketball title as a freshman last season, suffered a torn ACL in a scrimmage Saturday and will be lost for the entire season.

Andersen, a 5-foot-9 forward, averaged 5.5 points and 2.3 rebounds for Xavier last season. She led the team in 3-pointers with 23.

Andersen was injured Saturday during the first few minutes of a scrimmage at Kennedy High School as part of an IBCA clinic.

She is scheduled for knee surgery Dec. 3, according to Xavier Coach Tom Lilly.

Luehrsmann anxious to welcome gridders

Seven members of the Xavier boys basketball team are skipping practice this week, but they have a good excuse.

They also play for the Xavier football team, which is practicing this week for the Class 4A championship game against top-ranked Dowling Catholic Friday night in Cedar Falls.

The football players will not join the basketball team until at least next week, and it could be the week after that to give them a chance to catch their breath.

'Singing Saint' picks football over music

Harry Daubitz, the Singing Saint, had to make a tough choice this week.

He was selected to perform at the All-State Music Festival in Ames Saturday night, but he also plays football and the Xavier Saints have a date with Dowling in the championship game of the Class 4A playoffs Friday night in Cedar Falls.

He could have practiced for the Music Festival for part of the day Friday in Ames and gone straight to Cedar Falls for the game, but that would have meant missing the bus ride from Xavier to the UNI-Dome with his teammates.

He missed the bus ride last year as a junior when the Saints played in the state finals due to the Music Festival, but he didn't want to do it again.
