Stulken's clutch shot lifts Xavier girls

DUBUQUE - Ashley Stulken hit a hook shot at the buzzer Friday night to give the Xavier Saints a 34-33 victory over Dubuque Hempstead in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Dubuque.

Hempstead (2-4) took a 33-32 lead with two free throws, but Stulken answered for the victory.

Stulken led Xavier (5-1) with 10 points. Kayla Armstrong, Sarah Dickes and Lizzy Bailey scored six points apiece.

Hempstead led at halftime in the low-scoring game, 14-10.

Saints notch 1st MVC win for Luehrsmann

Three players scored in double figures and gave Xavier boys basketball coach Ryan Luehrsmann his first Mississippi Valley Conference victory Friday night in a 57-45 win over Dubuque Hempstead at the Xavier gym.

Trey Sampson led the Saints with 14 points. Matt Nelson and Corbin Woods added 11 points apiece.

“It’s a fun group and they have the right approach to the game and are very well-disciplined,” said Luehrsmann, whose team is off to a 4-0 start in his rookie season.“We needed to keep them off the boards and they are very athletic and second chance points were a factor, too.”

Trcka rolls Saints past City High

Tara Trcka rolled games of 245 and 246 for a 491 series that fired Xavier past Iowa City High, 2440-2141, Friday in girls bowling at May City Bowl.

Abbey Konzen shot a 367 series for the Saints.

City High rallies past Xavier boys bowlers

Iowa City High rallied from 85 pins down to beat Xavier, 2806-2798, Friday in boys bowling at May City Bowl.

Brett Young led Xavier with a 224 high game and 433 series. Zach Klemish had a 216 high game and 419 series.

Xavier led by 85 pins after the first round, but was outscored by 93 pins in the Baker round.

Drahozal's pair of pins lead Saints to split

DUBUQUE - Xavier wrestlers recorded five pins and the Saints beat Dubuque Hempstead, 43-33, Thursday night at Hempstead.

The Saints were beaten by Iowa City West, 60-16.

Jeff Vipond (106), Camden Chicchelly (113), Clint Lembeck (126), Nick Drahozal (145) and Sean Ickes (170) had pins against Hempstead.

Drahozal also had a pin against Iowa City West. Jerry Duball had a fall and Ickes a major decision for the Saints against the Trojans.
