Stanek helps Xavier girls top Assumption

DAVENPORT - Kiana Stanek popped in five 3-pointers and scored 16  points Tuesday night as the Xavier Saints topped Davenport Assumption, 61-52, in a battle of ranked teams in Davenport.

Assumption (6-3) is ranked No. 9 in Class 3A and Xavier (7-3) is ranked No. 10 in Class 4A.

Amelia Ivester pitched in 12 points for the Saints. Caitlynn Daniels and Lexi Noonan scored 11 apiece in a balanced attack.

Jasmine Harris netted 17 points for Assumption.

XAVIER (61): Stanek 5 1-1 16, Daniels 2 6-8 11, Brown 1 0-2 2, Noonan 4 3-6 11, Steffen 3 3-4 9, Ivester 6 0-2 12, Jasper 0 0-0 0. Totals: 21 13-23 61.

Xavier boys trimmed by Assumption

DAVENPORT - The Xavier boys basketball team won a state title last year, but the Saints are struggling so far this season.

Davenport Assumption trimmed Xavier, 62-60, Tuesday night in Davenport, leaving the Saints with a 2-5 record.

Matt Mims returned from a sprained ankle and led Xavier with 19  points, three assists and three steals. Max Techau collected a  double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Jackson Joens and Bryce Schulte scored 10 points apiece for the Saints.

Xavier trailed 47-38 after three quarters and made a surge in the final stanza before falling two points short. The Saints launched 21 3-point shots in the game, but made only four of them.

Liam Robbins, a 6-foot-11 center, poured in 24 points for Assumption (5-3).

XAVIER (60): Mims 7 3-3 19, Butkowski 2 0-2 4, Joens 4 0-0 10,  Q.Schulte 1 0-0 2, Techau 7 1-2 15, B.Schulte 3 4-6 10, Dempleworth 0  0-0 0. Totals 24 8-13 60.

Xavier bowlers sweep Dubuque Wahlert

The Xavier High School bowling teams swept their Mississippi Valley Conference meets with Dubuque Wahlert Tuesday at May City Lanes.

Jacob Fulton rolled a 225 game and 437 series as the Xavier boys won their contest, 2804 to 2641.

Cheyanne Crane enjoyed a 202 game and 398 series as the Xavier girls won, 2517 to 2347.

Maliki Wilson commits to Wayne State

Xavier High School tailback Maliki Wilson has accepted an offer to play college football at Wayne State University in Wayne, Neb., according to his father.

Wilson rushed for 2,054 yards and scored 24 touchdowns this season and was named to the elite all-state team by the Des Moines Register.

Wilson led Class 3A in rushing with the third-best total in Metro history.

Wilson finished his two-year career at Xavier with 3,327 yards rushing, which ranks No. 5 in Metro history. And he finished his career with 4,051 all-purpose yards as a runner, receiver, kickoff returns and punt returns

The Saints finished 11-1 this season and reached the semifinals of the Class 3A playoffs. They went 20-2 during Wilson's two years on the varsity.

No. 11 Xavier girls tame Kennedy

Lexi Noonan poured in 24 points Tuesday night as the 11th-ranked Xavier girls basketball team defeated Kennedy, 52-37, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Kennedy.

Noonan made eight field goals and was a perfect 8-for-8 at the foul line as the surging Saints won their fourth straight game and raised their overall record to 6-3 heading into the holidays.

Kylie Brown pitched in 12 points for Xavier.

Xavier has defeated three Metro opponents in a row with triumphs over Linn-Mar, Jefferson and Kennedy. The Saints have held their nine  opponents to an average of just 39.8 points per game and nobody has scored more than 51 points against them all season.

Hailey Dolphin led Kennedy with 24 points, matching Noonan for game-scoring honors. The struggling Cougars lost for the fifth time in  their last six games and fell to 3-6 for the campaign.

The Saints held a slim 20-18 lead at halftime, but they outscored the Cougars 32-19 in the second half.
