Andersen helps Saints top Wahlert

McKenna Andersen scored 13 points and Lexi Noonan added 10 to lead the 14th-ranked Xavier girls basketball team to a 45-32 win over Dubuque Wahlert on Friday at Xavier.

Tied 17-17 at halftime, the Saints pulled away in the second half, building a 29-24 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Xavier squared its record at 2-2.

Saints pinned by Iowa City West

The Xavier wrestling team opened the match with three pins, but the Saints lost to Iowa City West 53-23 in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual meet Thursday at Xavier.

Jeff Vipond pinned Keaton Speicher in 1 minute, 38 seconds at 113 pounds for the Saints, Keegan Schultschik pinned Hunter Davis in 1:53 at 120, and Patrick Chambers pinned Miguel Parades in 28 seconds at 126.

Xavier’s Clint Lembeck added a 16-1 technical fall in 2:21 over Jeff Garbutt at 138, but the Trojans won every other match. Lembeck is ranked No. 1 in the state.

Cataldo named Xavier baseball coach

Xavier High School has hired Bob Cataldo as its new varsity baseball coach, the school announced Wednesday.

Cataldo has served as a volunteer assistant for the Xavier varsity baseball program and has additional experience coaching for the baseball and football programs at Dowling Catholic High School in the 1990's.

Cataldo brings experience as a Division I athlete to the table, having participated in football and baseball at Notre Dame from 1988-1991, where he earned his degree in Economics in 1992.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to serve as head baseball coach at Xavier High School, and am excited to begin my duties and build relationships with our outstanding student-athletes and their families," said Cataldo.

"I sincerely thank Coach Dave Schemmel and Coach Jim Arp for their years of leadership in creating a baseball program with high expectations and a rich tradition. I look forward to continuing that success and building upon the foundation they created.”

Xavier girls fall to Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS - The Xavier girls basketball team lost to Cedar Falls, 45-30, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game Tuesday Night in Cedar Falls.

Kiana Stanek hit three 3-pointers and led the Saints with 11 points.

Saints dump Mount Pleasant in opener

MOUNT PLEASANT - Mitchell Burger popped in 14 points Monday night and made four steals as the Xavier Saints opened the season with a 61-28 victory at Mount Pleasant.

Ryan Stulken collected 10 points and five rebounds for Xavier. Blake Whitten scored nine points. Matt Mims had eight points and four assists. Jackson Joens snared six rebounds.

Max Techau missed the game for the Saints due to an injury.

Nobody scored more than six points for Mount Pleasant.
