Xavier cancels game; 3 others postponed

None of the high school football games that were scheduled for the Metro area were played Friday night due to the heavy thunderstorms and lightning that passed through the area.

Xavier High School canceled its home game against Dowling Catholic. The game will not be rescheduled. Dowling is unable to make another round trip from West Des Moines on Saturday for a possible makeup date.

The other three games in the Metro area were postponed until Saturday.

Washington will face Jefferson at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kingston Stadium.

Prairie will play Linn-Mar at 5 p.m. Saturday at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Marion will host Mount Vernon at 7 p.m. Saturday at Thomas Park.

Lion golfers edge Saints

Linn-Mar's Max Thrune and Xavier's Luke Winker shared medalist honors with even-par 36s, but the Lions topped the Saints by two strokes in a 3-team MVC meet Thursday at Hunters Ridge.

The Lions finished with a 151, two shots better than the Saints. Waterloo West was third at 189.

Both the Lions and the Saints got strong play. Twelve of the 14 golfers who competed for the Metro rivals shot 40 or lower.

That's been the story this week for Cedar Rapids Washington junior Frank Lindwall, who fired a 3-under-par 68 Tuesday and claimed medalist honors at the Washington Warrior Invitational at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

Lindwall nipped Tripp Kinney of Waukee by one shot Tuesday, just a day after the two premier golfers shared medalist honors with 3-under 69's in the Linn-Mar Invitational at Hunters Ridge.

Waukee won the team championship Tuesday at 294. Dowling took second place, followed by Linn-Mar, Washington and Xavier.

Max Thrune and Brent Larson of Linn-Mar tied for eighth at 5-over 76.
