Xavier High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Schulte poised for next step at Xavier

Bryce Schulte played a little game of catch with his old brother Reggie this summer, but this wasn't like the football games they used to play in the backyard at their home.

This game took place at the University of Northern Iowa, where Reggie Schulte is one of the quarterbacks for the Panthers. Just for fun, they invited Sawyer Kollmorgen, who is UNI's starting quarterback, and they also invited Rashadeem Gray, who is one of UNI's receivers and Reggie Schulte's roommate.

It was quite an experience for Bryce Schulte, a junior at Xavier High School who is getting ready for his second year as the Saints' starting quarterback.

Bryce loved hanging out with his older brother in Cedar Falls.

"It was awesome," he said Monday during a break in practice at Xavier. "He taught me so many things I didn't think about before I went up there. He helped me a lot with my technique and my release and stuff. It was phenomenal."

Reggie Schulte smashed all the passing records during his all-state career at Xavier and is entering his third year at Northern Iowa, hoping to climb the depth chart. Bryce Schulte accounted for 26 touchdowns for the Saints last season as a sophomore - 14 passing and 12 rushing - and is looking for even better things this year after helping Xavier reach the semifinals of the Class 3A playoffs.

Gonder leads Warriors to MVC title

Jabe Gonder played in 15 golf tournaments this summer to get ready for his senior campaign with the Washington Warriors.

It paid off handsomely Thursday.

Gonder fired a 1-over-par 71 to finish second in the individual standings and lead Washington to the team championship of the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet at Jones Park.

The Warriors posted a four-man score of 295 and won the tournament by 12 shots over Iowa City West.

Gonder had a stoke average of 81.25 for 18 holes last year, but he hit the links during the summer and came out firing in the first meet of the 2015 campaign.

Schemmel resigns as Xavier baseball coach

Dave Schemmel, the only baseball coach in Xavier High School history, resigned Friday.

Schemmel, who was previously the head coach at Cedar Rapids Regis and Cedar Rapids LaSalle before Xavier opened in 1998, posted a 431-234 career record with the Saints, including a state title in 2006 and state runner-up finishes in 2005 and 2007.

“This has been something that’s been on my mind for a few years now,” Schemmel said in a release from Xavier. “Because I look forward to the challenges that each new year brings, it’s just been difficult trying to find the right time to make the announcement.

“I’m so thankful for the opportunity and privilege to coach at Xavier. I am grateful for the backing of the administration, the hard work of my assistant coaches and the tremendous support of the parents and families of the players I’ve worked with. We’ve been blessed with some very talented and hardworking athletes. Hopefully we’ve made them better baseball players and that they’ve enjoyed their baseball experience at Xavier. I will cherish the great memories that I have from each team.”
