J-Hawks stay 3rd in softball poll

The Jefferson J-Hawks stayed in the No. 3 spot in the new Class 5A softball rankings Friday by the IGHSAU.

The J-Hawks have gotten off to a 7-1 start this season.

The Xavier Saints slipped one notch to No. 12 in Class 4A with a 4-4 mark.

CLASS 5A

Prairie sweeps Xavier in baseball

The surging Prairie Hawks swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Xavier on Friday, 10-3 and 10-5, at Ken Charipar Field.

The victories lifted Prairie to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the MVC. The Saints fell to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Cal Clark went 4-for-5 for the Hawks with a triple and two RBIs in the first game. Corbin Day was 3-for-4 with a double. Nic Mougin went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Trey Beckman and Alex Mixon had two hits.

Tyler Nunemaker, Ethan Copeland, Mougin and Day had two hits for Prairie in the nightcap. Mougin hit a triple and Day had two RBIs.

Nolan Arp had two hits for Xavier in the second game.

Hanigan heads Saints to verge of title

DES MOINES - The Xavier Saints will be gunning for their seventh state title Saturday thanks to a precocious freshman who used his head at the right time.

Will Hanigan scored the game-winning goal with 5 minutes, 27 seconds left in overtime Friday as the Saints trimmed Norwalk, 3-2, in the semifinals of the Class 2A state soccer tournament.

"That was one of the best moments of my life," said Hanigan, exuberant in victory. "I'm just glad I can help our team make it to the finals, but we deserved that game.

"I'm just super-happy with that."

Xavier (16-2) will face DeWitt Central (19-1) in the championship match Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines.

Xavier girls take 3rd at state tennis

ANKENY - Claire Bouchard, Jeanne Bouchard and Allison Jasper of Xavier finished third at the Class 1A state tennis tournament Friday in Ankeny.

The Bouchard sisters placed third in the state doubles competition and Jasper finished third in singles.

The Bouchard sisters lost to Micayla Taylor and Grace Blomstedt of Red Oak, 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinals. They defeated Olivia Fain and Lauren McManus of Waterloo Central in a tiebreaker, 1-6, 6-4, 10-8, for third place.

Jasper lost to Kate Walker of Red Oak, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals. She defeated Lily Hamilton of Grinnell in a tiebreaker, 7-5, 5-7, 10-6, for third place.

Xavier softball team pounds City High

The Xavier softball team rolled to a pair of victories over Iowa City High in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Xavier Thursday, 13-1 in four innings and 14-4.

Hannah Helms went 3-for-4 and scored two runs in the 13-1 victory. Maddie Morgan was 2-for-3. Morgan Breitbach had two RBIs. Erin Drahozal got the win with seven strikeouts.

Keera Ball went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs in the 14-4 verdict. Jenna Schwach, Jamie Feltes and Drahozal had two hits. Kylie Oldridge was the winning pitcher.

The Saints squared their record at 4-4.
