Saints split twinbill with IC High

The Xavier baseball team split a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader with Iowa City High Monday at Ken Charipar Field.

The Little Hawks won the first game, 3-2, thanks to two unearned runs in the third inning.

Xavier captured the nightcap, 7-2, behind a strong effort on the mound by Bryce Charipar, who struck out nine batters and allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Max Hammerberg had two hits and two RBIs for the Saints in the 7-2 victory.

Matt Callahan pitched a complete game and was the hard-luck loser for Xavier in the first contest.

The split left Xavier with a 2-4 record. The Saints are ranked No. 7 in Class 3A. Iowa City High is 5-1 overall.

No.2 Saints earn trip to state soccer

Luke Koechner fired in two goals Saturday as the Xavier Saints blanked Clear Creek-Amana, 4-0, in the Class 2A substate finals at Heco Field.

The second-ranked Saints (14-2) will face seventh-ranked ADM (16-4) in the opening round of the state soccer tournament Thursday at 2:35 p.m. in Des Moines.

Xavier has won six state titles in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011 and 2013.

Koechner gave the Saints an early 1-0 lead on an assist from Stephen Jones. Will Hanigan made it 2-0 with an assist from Luke Duball, then Koechner scored again on an assist from Duball to make it 3-0 at halftime.

J-Hawks 3rd, Saints 11th in softball poll

The Cedar Rapids Jefferson softball team is ranked third in Class 5A in the first rankings of the season by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The Xavier Saints are ranked 11th in Class 4A.

The top-ranked teams are Johnston in 5A, Fort Dodge in 4A, Solon in 3A, Alburnett in 2A and Woodbury Central in 1A.

Paulson tops all-Metro tennis team

Linn-Mar senior Tim Paulson has been named the Athlete of the Year on the 2015 All-Metro Tennis Team, it was announced Friday.

Chris Wundram of Linn-Mar was named the Metro Coach of the Year. The Lions are undefeated this season and ranked No. 1 in the state.

Jackson Hoyt of Washington, Trevor McCann of Linn-Mar, Ben Curley of Xavier, Rami Hemaiden of Kennedy and Caleb Scott of Marion joined Paulson on the first team.

No. 2 Saints roll into substate finals

Connor Ramlo, Luke Duball and Nolan Armstrong scored two goals Thursday as the second-ranked Xavier Saints defeated Fort Madison, 8-0, in the semifinals of the Class 2A substate soccer tournament at Heco Field.

Xavier (13-2) will host Clear Creek-Amana in the substate finals Saturday at noon.

Camden Stovie and Shane Scott also scored goals for Xavier.

Will Hanigan collected three assists for the Saints. Ramlo had two assists. Stephen Jones, Luke Koechner and Nick Koechner also had assists.

Jordan Even and Austin Havertape combined for the shutout in goal.
