Xavier boys edge Iowa City West

IOWA CITY - The Baker round was the difference as the Xavier boys bowling team beat Iowa City West, 2,881-2,843, Tuesday at Colonial Lanes in Iowa City.

The Trojans held a 1,912 to 1,905 lead after the first round, but the Saints pulled ahead 976 to 931 in the Baker round.

Caleb Miller led Xavier with a 457 series, while Patrick Wood led Iowa City West with a 491 series.

Xavier (2,881): Caleb Miller 246-211=457, Charlie Hart 163-235=398, Michael Buenzow 156-225=381, Cameron Zaugg 194-160=354, Jacob Fulton 176-139=315, Brett Young 133-179=312.

Iowa City West (2,843): Patrick Wood 224-267=491, Eric Vidhamali 224-233=457, Jared Donovan 185-199=384, Heath Schintler 138-167=305, Nick Rohm 139-136=276, Matt Bertell 136-133=269.

Xavier: 1,905-976=2,881.
Iowa City West: 1,912-931=2,843.

 

Women of Troy down Saints

IOWA CITY - Kayla Thompson had the high series of the day with 348 pins for Xavier, but it wasn’t enough as Iowa City West won 2,056 to 1,786 Tuesday at Colonial Lanes in Iowa City.

Erica Roth had a 345 series to lead the Women of Troy.

Iowa City West (2,056): Erica Roth 177-168=345, Brooke Kreiss 147-173=320, Samantha Lovell 154-154=308, Nicole Ritchy 106-123=229, Shatiana Cooper 91-90=181, Kalei Strabala 78-81=159.

Xavier (1,786): Kayla Thompson 167-181=348, Cheyenne Crae 111-137=248, Ally Eipert 86-134=220, Jamison Janson 96-112=208, Lauren Meyer 76-121=197.

Iowa City West: 1,383-673=2,056.
Xavier: 1,221-565=1,786.

 

9 Metro gridders named all-state

Nine football players from the Metro area have been named all-state by the Des Moines Register.

Julian Good-Jones and Connor Vincent of Cedar Rapids Washington were named to the elite all-state squad after helping the Warriors finish 13-1 and reach the Class 4A finals. Good-Jones was selected on the offensive line and Vincent was named at linebacker.

Reid Snitker of Washington made the Class 4A first team as a defensive back. Bryce Meeker of Prairie was named first team in 4A on the offensive line and JoJo Simpson of Prairie was named to the second team in 4A on the defensive line.

Three members of the Xavier Saints were honored as second-team selections in Class 3A. Tim Otting was selected on the offensive line, Jay Kortemeyer was named at running back and Michael Maher was named to the defensive line.

Eric Gustafson of Cedar Valley Christian was named second team all-state on defense in Eight-Player football.

Saints, Indians make all-district football

Seven members of the Xavier High School football team have been named to the top squad on the Class 3A District 4 all-star team.

Nic Ekland, Thomas Ickes, Dylan Eller, Michael Maher, Jay Kortemeyer, Tim Otting and Louis Hasley were named first team all-district for the Saints.

Camden Stovie, Matt Downey, Noah Clasen and Bryce Schulte were named second team all-district from Xavier. Joe Welch and Logan Brown were named to the academic all-district team.

Hayden Meister and Jack Serbousek of Marion High School were named to the all-district first team. Devin Quinn, John Carstensen, Kyle Van Meter and Kory Walsh were named second team all-district for the Indians.

Meister, Carter Stigge, Austin Loney, Eli Frazier, Austin Brown, Derek Smith, Jacob Deeter, Alex Gaffney and Ryan Whalen made the academic squad.

 

Cougars, Saints make girls basketball poll

The Kennedy Cougars and Xavier Saints have been ranked in the preseason girls basketball poll, the IGHSAU announced Wednesday.

Kennedy is ranked No. 8 in Class 5A. The Cougars went 16-8 last year and reached the state tournament.

Xavier is ranked No. 14 in Class 4A. The Saints finished 11-12 last year.

Dowling is the No. 1 team in 5A and Harlan is the No. 1 club in 4A.
