Arrington leads Warriors past J-Hawks, 56-41

With up-and-coming junior jumping jack Maurice Arrington playing his second great game in a row, the Washington boys rolled over Jefferson 56-41 Friday night in the J-Hawk gym.

The long-limbed 6-foot-6 first-year starter, who scored 17 two weeks ago in a loss to Kennedy, had a career-high 19 points on a variety of slick inside moves and even one 3-pointer.

“He's consistently getting better and better,” Warrior Coach Adam Sanchez said of the athletic stringbean. “He's starting to understand how he can become a really good player.”

McDermott's prayer answered for Xavier

Adam McDermott proved himself to be a clutch performer when he got his opportunities last season as a sophomore.

But nothing he did as a 10th grader could match what the Xavier guard pulled off to win Tuesday night’s game against Jefferson at the Ron Thillen Gymnasium.

Jefferson’s Brandon Wiederin split a pair of free throws with 2.3 seconds remaining that gave the J-Hawks a two-point lead.

Xavier got the ball in to McDermott, who weaved through a wave of Jefferson defenders to let a shot go at half court, just ahead of the final buzzer. It banked in off the glass, lifting the Saints to a 36-35 victory.

Bohannon popped in a smooth 20 points and the Lions waltzed past the J-Hawks, 61-33, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at the Jefferson gym.

J-Hawks hold off Marion, 57-53

Cedar Rapids Jefferson survived a fourth-quarter comeback by the Marion Indians and snagged a 57-53 win over a determined Marion squad at Jefferson Saturday night.

The J-Hawks were led by Jacob Olson with 25 points. His two free throws with 3.7 seconds left iced the victory.

Brandon Horman, co-coach of Jefferson, joined ESPN radio and Scott Unash after the game and emphasized that nothing comes easy, but the J-Hawks made some big plays down the stretch and “When better decisions are made, we came out OK.”
