Jefferson boys take care of Prairie

Maybe it’s because several of the players competed against each other for years in AAU ball, but the boys game Tuesday night between Jefferson and Prairie seemed more like something you’d see at the Salvation Army gym.

The refs, for the most part, let them play without too much concern about fouls. There were quite a few wayward passes and loose balls on the court. And, as is so often the case in kids’ league contests, a few key players scored most of the points while the rest looked on.

In a matchup of two struggling teams trying to bounce back for postseason play, the J-Hawks prevailed 58-45 at Jefferson.

Surging Warriors knock off J-Hawks

Cedar Rapids Jefferson junior Jacob Olson torched Washington for a career-high 31 points in a 57-36 victory when the two clubs met back in December.

The Warriors remembered that painful encounter and did something about it Friday night.

Washington pestered Olson all night in the rematch at Jefferson and defeated the J-Hawks, 50-40, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game for its fourth straight victory.

Xavier pressure stifles J-Hawks

It took the Xavier boys awhile to get into their game on their home floor Tuesday night.

But when they got away from playing Jefferson’s style of slow-ball and picked up speed, they ran right over the J-Hawks, 51-41.

On the heels of three straight long bombs by Creighton Robinson in a minute’s time, Stu Ordman’s Jefferson crew held a 21-7 lead with 5:20 to go in the second quarter.

Bob Fontana's basketball office at Kennedy High School is located just beyond a row of toilets in a corner of the boys locker room.

Now that he's won 300 games, maybe the school will give him fancier digs.

Fontana reached the milestone Friday night as the Cougars stuffed Jefferson, 47-32, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Kennedy.

J-Hawks beat Wahlert with free throws

The free throw line can often be an intimidating place. On Tuesday night, Jefferson found it to be quite the contrary as they made themselves at home at the charity stripe.

The J-Hawks made 24 of 26 free throws, most of them late in the fourth quarter, as they went on to defeat Dubuque Wahlert, 63-54, at the Jefferson gym.

“They had ice water in their veins,” said Jefferson Coach Stu Ordman of his group of savvy foul shooters. “Twenty-four for 26 is not bad in my book.”
