Trio of J-Hawks double up in rout

Jefferson had three girls with double-doubles and the J-Hawks rolled past MVC doormat Waterloo East, 68-28, Tuesday night at Jefferson.

Junior Maddie Koolbeck led the J-Hawks (8-12, 3-12) with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomores Maddy Blietz and Kieley Brathwaite each had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

“Koolbeck had her typical game,” Jefferson Coach Larry Niemeyer said. “Maddy Blietz had a nice game.”

Koolbeck teamed up with Brathwaite in the first half as the post duo combined for 23 of the J-Hawks' 31 points.

“It is good that people are stepping up,” Koolbeck said. “If everyone can score and contribute it makes us more of an offensive threat.”

Blietz paired with Koolbeck for 24 of the J-Hawks' 37 second-half points.

Despite a sluggish first quarter from the J-Hawks there was little doubt from the start as the Jefferson took an early 13-5 lead.

“We didn’t play great in the first half,” Niemeyer said. “We were a half step behind and missed some easy buckets. We kind of played to our competition early.”

“It is hard to get pumped up for a game with little hype,” Koolbeck added.

Jefferson battled through foul trouble in the second quarter, but pushed their lead to 19 by halftime.

The second half saw the J-Hawks continue to extend their lead. They were up by 26 after three quarters and 40 at the final buzzer.

Jefferson forced 27 Trojan turnovers and controlled all the aspects of the game throughout.East dropped to 0-20 overall and 0-15 in the MVC.

Jefferson gets a much tougher test to end the regular season Friday night when it hosts seventh-ranked Kennedy in the opener of a girl/boy doubleheader.

“We have to get off to a better start and come ready to play,” Niemeyer said. “We can’t get behind big early. It is difficult to come back.”

“We are going to have to play a lot better and come prepared,” Koolbeck said, reemphasizing Niemeyer’s thoughts. “We need a quick start to avoid a big hole early.”
