Kuba leaves baseball program for softball

Mike Kuba said his gut was aching all day Wednesday after he finally made his decision to step down as Jefferson's baseball coach.

"I still have a gut ache," Kuba said Wednesday night.

But that pain is expected to be eased by the time next spring rolls around and Kuba gets the chance to work with his daughter, Erin, and the Jefferson softball team.

Kuba resigned his post as baseball coach to become an assistant coach on new Jefferson softball coach Brian Erbe's staff.

"I'm leaving a great program and a great group of kids," Kuba said. "This is nothing I sought after and that's what I told my team when I met with them.

"But part of our program and something I firmly believe in is family and after 17 years it was time for me to move in that direction, especially with what we've gone through the past year."

Kuba's daughter Erin, a freshman, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last May. She underwent surgery to remove her thyroid and had radiated iodine treatments over the summer. She had her last treatment Aug. 10 and a full body cancer scan last Friday.

"We got the results Monday," Mike Kuba said. "There still is an isolated area of concern around where her thyroid was, but we'll go another six months and check it again. Then we'll get yearly checkups after that."

The chance to work with Erin and younger daughter Emily, as well as Erbe, was too much for Kuba to pass up.

"Brian called me shortly after he was hired and asked me if I would come on board," said Kuba, who like Erbe is a facilitator for at-risk students at Jefferson. "We have worked together and been good friends for 18 years.

"I told him when that I became a head coach, I was going to hire him as one of my assistants and I tried to get him on the baseball staff, but it never worked out. We share the same philosophies and have similar coaching styles. I think it will be an enjoyable working relationship with the ultimate goal to keep producing a winning program."

Kuba was on the Jefferson baseball staff for 17 years, the last seven as the head coach. Erbe spent the last 10 years as Xavier's head coach after serving on former coach Larry Niemeyer's staff as an assistant for 10 years.

Kuba started his coaching career as an assistant softball coach at Linn-Mar, a job he held for two years before joining the Jeff baseball program.

"That was my first coaching gig and I took it because there was nothing available in baseball," he said.

Kuba is taking the plunge back into softball this fall and spring, coaching daughter Emily's 12U Blue Devils team. He said the family also will be busy weekends into November with Erin's traveling softball team, the Barracudas, who will be playing in college showcases in locales such as St. Louis, Kansas City and Chicago.

"It's just another chapter," Kuba said. "Doors like these don't open very often."

Kuba's departure leaves a door open for another coach to take over the baseball program.

"We are not leaving the cupboard bare," Kuba said. "The baseball program is going to be young, with a handful of seniors. But there's a larger handful of juniors and some eighth graders - like Spencer Van Scoyoc - who are going to be freshmen that may have to be pushed along. It's going to be exciting.

"I've also been thinking about all the players we've had over the past 17 years," he said, ticking off a half dozen names. "It's just a whirlwind of neat memories for me.

"That's what's making my gut ache."

Jefferson Athletics Director Chris Deam said in a statement that the J-Hawks will begin an immediate search to find a new baseball coach.

Late-inning collapse sidelines J-Hawks

MUSCATINE -- The Jefferson baseball team found out the hard way why baseball games last seven innings Friday night against Muscatine.

After battling the Muskies and star pitcher Derek Burkamper toe-to-toe for six innings, the J-Hawks imploded in the top of the seventh. Three Jefferson errors opened the door for six Muscatine runs and the Muskies beat the J-Hawks, 9-2, in a Class 4A substate first-round game at Tom Bruner Field.

Muscatine (25-11) advances to the substate semifinals Monday night at 7. It will host Prairie, which beat Ottumwa, 7-1, Friday.

"For six innings we hung in there and we competed," Jefferson Coach Mike Kuba said. "I told our guys not to be ashamed of that score. I thought we left it all out on the field.

"(Muscatine) was a very good team with a very good pitcher and we had them on the ropes tonight."

Jefferson (16-23) battled back from a 3-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth.

Back-to-back one-out singles by Austin Goodell and Layne Sullivan gave the J-Hawks a pair of runners and Colten Jourdan walked to load the bases.

Sam Techau then hit what appeared to be a double play grounder to short. But he beat the throw to first to plate the first run. Dylan Wright followed with a sharp one-hopper off the glove of Burkamper that bounced into the infield grass between short and third. Burkamper scurried to pick it up, but his throw to first was too late and another run scored, pulling Jefferson within 3-2.

Jefferson senior Jordan Dee kept the Muskies off balance with a mix of fastball, curve and change and allowed only four hits through six innings.

But the Muscatine seventh inning started with a throwing error by shortstop Ky Kramer. Brogan Simonsen, who was trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt, instead walked. Tyler Kovach followed with a sacrifice bunt that put runners at second and third and Dee was lifted in favor of Jourdan, who caught the first 6 1/3 innings.

Austin Moss greeted Jourdan with a liner that deflected off Jourdan's glove toward Kramer at short. The first run of the inning scored while Kramer tried to throw out Simonsen running to third. Instead the ball flew past Techau, the third baseman, to the fence, allowing Kovach to score. Moss ended up at third base when Techau threw home and the ball scooted away from catcher Ben Koering.

One out later, Max Freilinger reached when Kramer was unable to glove his grounder for another error that scored Moss. Trent Herman added an RBI single and Brooks Wagner a two-run double to complete the Muskies' scoring.

"We knew we had to stay out of the big inning," Kuba said. "We knew we needed to play error-free ball. We couldn't have those on a night like this.

"Then we weren't able to create the big inning for us."

Jefferson got singles by Wright and Dylan Jellison leading off the seventh, and the runners moved up to second and third on Christian Knox's ground out. But Tiedtke and Dee struck out to end the game.

Burkamper, a junior flamethrower with a nasty curveball who reportedly has committed to play collegiately at Nebraska, scattered eight hits and struck out 11 for the win.

"We knew we were facing a Division I pitcher," said Goodell, who had two hits. "We knew we were going to have to grind.

"It was a 3-2 ballgame and we had a chance. It just wasn't enough."

It was the last game for seven Jefferson senior starters: Goodell, Tiedtke, Dee, Jourdan, Techau, Jellison and Knox.

"I wouldn't trade this team for anything," said Tiedtke, who also had two hits. Tiedtke led the J-Hawks in batting and RBIs and was named the team's Most Valuable Player at its banquet Thursday night. "This was a great group of guys. I wouldn't trade any one of them."

"We're a bunch of fighters," Goodell said. "We always came out to play. It was a fun ride."

The start of the game was delayed one hour because of rain. Jefferson won the pregame coin toss and was the home team.

J-Hawks fall to North in 9 innings

DAVENPORT -- Perhaps it was because it was the last game of the regular season -- in extra innings -- and nothing of consequence was dependent upon its outcome.

Or perhaps it was past someone's bedtime.

Whatever the reason, an apparent out was ruled a safe call at the plate and Davenport North handed Jefferson an 8-7, nine-inning defeat in a non-conference baseball game at Ken Kaul Field.

Jefferson closed out the regular season 16-22. North finished 15-21.

North's Blain Samuelson opened the ninth inning with a blooper that fell into shallow left between three fielders for a single. He stole second and went third on Jacob TeBrake's long fly ball to the warning track in right field.

Jefferson Coach Mike Kuba decided to load up the bases, issuing intentional walks to Zach Fries and Chase Roehm, to set up a force out at any base.

The J-Hawks pulled their infield in to the edge of the grass and Jared Ringsdorf hit a chopper to shortstop Ky Kramer. His throw home to catcher Colten Jourdan appeared in time for the force to retire a sliding Samuelson. But the umpire ruled Samuelson beat the throw to the plate.

And the J-Hawks lost in the bottom of the last inning for the second time in their last three games.

Kuba was disappointed with the loss, but said it was a good experience for the J-Hawks heading into Friday night's Class 4A substate first round game at Muscatine.

"We were put in a lot of spots that, hopefully, will benefit us Friday night," he said.

North scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning after Jefferson had taken a 1-0 lead. Jefferson eighth grader Spencer Van Scoyoc, after taking a ground ball of his leg that ricocheted to Kramer for a ground out, hit the next three batters. The latter two forced in runs. Cooper Roehm, who had two hits in the inning from his leadoff spot, also had a two-run single.

The J-Hawks fought back with two runs in each of the second, fifth and sixth innings to tie the game. Layne Sullivan had a sacrifice fly in the second inning and another run scored on an error. Two runs scored on wild pitches in the fifth and Chance Tiedtke had a two-run single in the sixth.

"We inched our way back and that's what you have to do when you get behind like that early," Kuba said.

Jefferson used six pitchers, one an inning until sophomore Ben Koering was lifted with a sore shoulder in the fifth. Senior Sam Techau came in and pitched the final 3 2/3 innings and took the loss.

Both teams had eight hits. Jefferson's Jordan Dee had three hits and Tiedtke had two. Senior Christian Knox scored three runs and stole two bases. Jefferson had five stolen bases.
