J-Hawks steal a win away from Burlington

One night after giving away a game at Waterloo East, Jefferson's baseball team stole one away from Burlington on Saturday night.

Austin Goodell's steal of home on a failed squeeze bunt attempt scored the winning run and Jefferson beat Burlington, 7-6, at Jefferson.

Jefferson (16-21) rallied from a 6-4 deficit with two runs in the sixth inning and one run in the seventh. Senior Chance Tiedtke, playing his final home at Jefferson on senior night, was 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBIs.

Goodell led off the Jefferson seventh with a single. Sam Techau laid down a bunt that Burlington pitcher Joe George fielded. George threw to second base in an attempt to retire Goodell, but the throw sailed into center field and the runners ended up at second and third. Ben Koering was intentionally walked, loading the bases and setting up a force out at every base.

With Ky Kramer at the plate, Jefferson Coach Mike Kuba flashed the sign for the suicide squeeze. Goodell took off for home, George threw a pitch inside that Kramer missed and the ball bounced off the glove of catcher Derek Elmore. Goodell crossed the plate with the winning run.

"I missed it and luckily the catcher missed it, too, so we could score," Kramer said.

The squeeze play is nothing new for the J-Hawks. It has been a favorite of Kuba's this summer with this team.

"I wouldn't say it's our bread-and-butter," Kuba said. "But, with our team, we have to put the ball in play and move runners."

The J-Hawks used a sacrifice bunt by No. 3 hitter Jordan Dee to score the tying runs in the bottom of the sixth. Dee's bunt advanced Dylan Jellison and Christian Knox to second and third base with one out. Tiedtke followed with a grounder that pulled the first baseman toward the hole between first and second. He gloved it and flipped to the pitcher George covering at first base as Jellison crossed the plate.

George continued down the line and crossed into foul territory. Knox stopped momentarily before taking off for home and beating George's throw to the plate with the tying run.

"Coach told me to watch him as I round third," Knox said. "Then he said no, then he told me to go and then he said no. I said to myself, 'Whatever, I'm going.' I got thrown out before, but I was going to give it my best try."

Knox was thrown out at the plate on a throw by Burlington right fielder Kyle Werner in the fourth inning.

Kuba said he knew Knox was going to try to score the tying run in the sixth.

"My last 'No,' I knew he was going," he said. "Our players have good instincts and that was a good time for a gamble."

Tiedtke, who doubled home two runs in the first inning and singled home another in the fourth, got credit for two RBIs on the play.

"I got an outside pitch and was just trying to put the ball in play," said Tiedtke, whose 32 RBIs lead the team. "I told coach (Gordy Nordgren at first base), 'How'd you like my swinging bunt?' Then I found out I got two RBIs when I got back to the dugout.

"If I've been the right man in the right spot it's because my teammates have put me there. I try not to do too much with the ball besides putting it in play and helping out my team. Good things happen when you put the ball in play."

Tiedtke pitched the first five innings of the game, setting him up as starter when the J-Hawks open substate play Friday night at Muscatine.

"This game helped me," he said. "I was working on my curveball and I had a good fastball tonight. I think it got me mentally prepared for Muscatine, if I pitch that game."

Kuba would not commit to naming his starter. Tiedtke worked five innings and Colten Jourdan the last two. The pair have been at the top of the J-Hawks' rotation all summer, with Dee a close third.

"I think this was a good confidence builder for Chance," Kuba said. "He was upbeat and positive, even when we got down one or two runs. He had the right mental makeup and did some nice things."

Tiedtke said he was just trying to change the "mojo" after the J-Hawks gave up five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday night in a 6-5 loss at Waterloo East.

"We were disappointed and we needed some new mojo," he said. "Once we started putting the ball in play, we knew we could fight back. Everyone contributed and that's something we're going to have to take with us to Davenport and Muscatine."

Jellison scored three runs. Goodell had two hits and an RBI. Jefferson had four sacrifice bunts by four different players.

Jefferson had 11 seniors making their final home appearance. Seven were starters.

"This was really important. This was a lot of guys' last home game," said Knox, who will play football and baseball this fall at Ellsworth Community College. "This meant a lot."

Jefferson closes out the regular season Wednesday at Davenport North. The only way the J-Hawks can play a home game in the tournament is if they beat Muscatine and Burlington (11-22) upsets top-seeded Linn-Mar on Friday. In that case, Jefferson would host Burlington on July 16.

J-Hawks give away a win at Waterloo

WATERLOO -- Jefferson clutched defeat from the jaws of victory Friday evening against Waterloo East.

The J-Hawks beat the Trojans 11-4 in the first game of the Mississippi Valley Conference baseball doubleheader and were headed toward a sweep, carrying a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap.

But two J-Hawk errors led to five unearned runs and East rallied for a 6-5 win.

Jefferson (15-21, 13-13) had 25 hits in the doubleheader. The J-Hawks rapped out 15 hits in the opener, three each by Dylan Jellison and Christian Knox, and two apiece for Chance Tiedtke, Colten Jourdan and Sam Techau. Jellison and Layne Sullivan had two RBIs apiece.

East (7-30, 5-21) held a 4-3 lead after four innings. Jefferson scored four runs in the fifth, all unearned, and added three more in the sixth to blow the game open.

Jordan Dee scattered eight hits in a complete game effort. He walked only one and struck out two.

Austin Goodell's two-run home run staked Jefferson to 2-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap. The J-Hawks tallied three times in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead. Ben Koering's two-run single highlighted the frame.

Dylan Wright worked six strong innings for the J-Hawks, but was victimized by his defense in the seventh. A lead-off single and back-to-back errors loaded the bases with no one out. Alex Schutte fouled out before Zach Howard's single drove in a run and chased Wright from the game.

Jellison entered the fray and was greeted with an RBI single by Dakota Scribner that cut the J-Hawks' lead to 5-3. Jakob Faith then delivered a two-run single that tied the game.

With the winning run at third base, Jefferson pulled its infield in to cut off the run at the plate. East's John Magnuson hit a scorcher that Jeff shortstop Ky Kramer picked on one hop. He held the runner at third and got the runner at second for the second out of the inning.

East's Bryce Frost then flared a fly ball that Tiedtke, the J-Hawks' left fielder, dove for but was unable to catch.

Jefferson plays its final home game Saturday when it hosts Burlington in a sophomore/varsity doubleheader that starts at 5 p.m. It is senior night.

J-Hawk defense melts down in loss to North Scott

ELDRIDGE -- North Scott scored nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings and rallied to beat Jefferson, 14-7, in a non-conference baseball game played on a steamy Fourth of July afternoon.

All nine runs scored after two were out. The 10th-ranked Lancers (28-6) scored four runs in the fifth inning and five runs in the sixth.

Jefferson (14-20) lost for the fifth time in its last six games. The J-Hawks committed seven errors, including three in the North Scott sixth inning.

Chance Tiedtke was 3-for-4 and drove in three runs for Jefferson. Dylan Wright and Ky Kramer had two hits apiece.

North Scott held a 5-3 lead when Jefferson scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead. Tiedtke, Layne Sullivan, Wright and Kramer had run-scoring hits.

Jefferson appeared to get a huge break in the bottom of the fifth. With no outs and bases loaded, North Scott's Zach Breneman hit an apparent sacrifice fly to Tiedtke in left. But the run was disallowed when North Scott runner Ryan Schelin was ruled to have left third base too early and was called out on appeal. But a hit batsman loaded the bases back up and JD Pumphrey cleared them off with a double that put the Lancers ahead to stay, 8-7.

Colby Sorensen's two-run triple highlighted North Scott's five-run seventh.

Jefferson closes out the Mississippi Valley Conference season Friday with a doubleheader at Waterloo East.

Jahlas sets table; Cougars feast on J-Hawks

Josh Jahlas set the table and the Kennedy Cougars dined on Jefferson pitching Tuesday night at Jefferson.

Jahlas was 3-for-3, scored four runs and drove in one to lead No. 2 Kennedy past Jefferson, 10-0, in six innings in a Mississippi Valley Conference baseball game.

Cody Bell swatted a two-run home run and drove in three runs for Kennedy (26-4, 19-4).

Jahlas, Kennedy's lead-off hitter, reached base all four plate appearances.

"I feel like that's my job," said Jahlas, who also made a diving catch in center field to rob Jefferson's Colten Jourdan of an extra-base hit. "I know we have good hitters behind me that will drive me home."

Jahlas boosted his batting average to .448.

"I'm coming up to the plate with confidence and that continued tonight," he said.

"When you have a guy like that, who understands how to put pressure on the defense, understands opponents' strengths and weaknesses, that's a terrific advantage for us," Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer said.

The Cougars had to go eight innings to beat Jefferson, 9-8, on Monday night at Kennedy.

"I think we were more focused tonight," said Jahlas, who had the game-tying hit that sent Monday's game into extra innings. "I think we may have taken them too lightly yesterday. They're a good team and they hit the ball well."

After collecting 12 hits Monday, Jefferson (14-19, 12-12) was held to two safeties Tuesday by Alex Hayden and Nick Appleget. Hayden (8-1) gave up one hit in the first five innings.

"Last night we put hits together and scored some runs," said Jefferson senior Chance Tiedtke, who had a first-inning single. "Tonight, we didn't get too many hits and it was hard to stay positive. I think we were still kind of thinking about last night's game and you can't do that in baseball because every game is different."

This one was a lot different. Instead of having to rally from behind, Kennedy jumped on Jefferson's Jourdan for two runs in the first inning and three more in the second for a 5-0 lead.

Jahlas singled to lead off the game and went second on a sacrifice bunt by Derek Jacobus. Bell was hit by a pitch before Jourdan bounced a pitch that got away from Jefferson catcher Ben Koering. Jahlas raced to third on the wild pitch and scored when Koering's throw was low and bounced away for an error.

That type of execution was lacking in Monday's game, and Hoyer let his club know he wasn't happy about it following the contest.

Hoyer cracked a smile following Tuesday's tilt, which included three sacrifice flies and only five runners left on base.

"This was more like it," Hoyer said.

Jahlas had an RBI double, and Derek Jacobus and Bell had sacrifice flies in the second inning. Bell belted his two-run home run in the fourth inning and the Cougars tallied three times in the sixth. Jahlas doubled leading off the inning and scored on consecutive wild pitches by Layne Sullivan. Derek Jacobus, who had walked, scored on a passed ball and Bell, who had singled, scored on Devon Jacobus' sacrifice fly.

"We knew we couldn't put ourselves in a hole, but that's what we did," Jefferson Coach Mike Kuba said. "We showed up flat tonight, for whatever reason. We couldn't get it going."

Jefferson played without starters Jordan Dee (wrist) and Austin Goodell (ankle), both of whom were injured in Monday's game. Kuba said both are day-to-day.

"It's tough to take two strong, put the ball in play hitters out of your lineup," Kuba said.

Jefferson has little time to dwell on its loss. The J-Hawks play Wednesday at North Scott in a JV/varsity doubleheader that starts at 10 a.m.

Kennedy, meanwhile, has three contests on Friday. The Cougars will complete a suspended game against Dubuque Wahlert at 2:30 p.m., then host Waterloo West in a doubleheader that starts at 5 p.m.

"That will be a test of our mental toughness," Hoyer said. "We're trying to stay in the hunt for a conference title. We'll see if we can finish what we started."

Lloyd comes through in the clutch for Cougars

Adam Lloyd said he was supposed to take a pitch when he stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning of Kennedy's baseball game Monday night against Jefferson.

But ...

"In the heat of the moment I thought I'd take a hack at it," Lloyd said, discounting the possibility of failure. "I still had two more strikes left."

He didn't need them.

Lloyd's single plated Cody Bell with the winning run and the No. 2 Cougars escaped the upset-minded J-Hawks, 9-8, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Kennedy.
