Kernels drop 8th game in row

BURLINGTON - The Cedar Rapids Kernels lost, 7-2, at Burlington Saturday night, dropping their eighth straight ballgame before 653 fans at Community Field.

The Kernels scored the first two runs of the game, but the Bees tallied the final seven runs. Burlington scored three runs in both the third and fifth innings.

For the third consecutive game in the series, the Kernels scored the first run. The Kernels took a 1-0 lead when Mitch Garver's RBI single to left scored Ryan Walker, who had singled to lead off the inning.

The Kernels took a 2-0 lead in the second inning without the use of a hit. J.D. Williams started the frame by working a base on balls. He stole second base and later came home on an RBI groundout by B.K. Santy.

Eric Aguilera put Burlington on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to right field, making the score 2-1. It was Aguilera's second home run of the season.

The Bees took a 4-2 lead in the third inning as they scored three times on four hits. Three of the hits were extra-base hits.

Erick Salcedo started the inning with an infield single. Two batters later, Chad Hinshaw doubled into the left-field corner to put two in scoring position.

Mike Fish's two-run triple to deep left-center scored both Salcedo and Hinshaw to give the Bees their first lead. Aguilera drove in another run with an RBI double down the left-field line, plating Fish to put the Bees up by a pair at 4-2.

Burlington scored three more runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-2 lead. The first four hitters reached base and three of them came around to score.

Hinshaw singled and scored on Fish's RBI double. Aguilera then walked before an RBI double by Brandon Bayardi scored Fish. Aguilera came home from third base on a sacrifice fly by Exicardo Cayones, putting Burlington up by five runs.

Ryan Eades (3-5) started and went five innings in the loss for the Kernels (19-23). He allowed seven runs on 10 hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Clint Sharp (1-3) started and pitched six innings for the win. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out three and walking three.

Brandon Bixler went two scoreless and hitless innings in relief for the Kernels, striking out two and walking two. Hudson Boyd pitched the eighth inning, allowing one hit and no runs while striking out one.
