Fry's slam keys J-Hawks sweep

Kenna Fry's grand slam erased a three-run deficit and lifted No. 9 Jefferson past No. 12 Xavier, 12-10, Tuesday and to a sweep of a Mississippi Valley Conference softball doubleheader.

The J-Hawks won the opener, 6-2.

Rachel Sedlacek slugged home runs in both games for Jefferson (7-1, 4-0). Both were three-run shots and the second gave the J-Hawks a 7-6 lead in the fourth inning of the nightcap.

“I just try to hit it where it’s pitched,” said Sedlacek, who was 5-for-9 with 7 RBIs in the twinbill. “I saw good pitches and did what I could. It worked out well tonight.”

Xavier (6-3, 5-3) came back and reclaimed the lead, 10-7, with four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

But the J-Hawks weren't done, battling back again in the top of the sixth inning. A hit batsman, error and walk loaded the bases for Fry, who capped a night full of big hits with a grand slam.

“It was right down the middle and I just drove it up the middle,” said Fry, who was 2-for-4 with five RBIs in the nightcap.

Jefferson added another run in the seventh and Hannah Petersen shut down the Saints to cement her second win of the night.

“The defense made some good plays and helped me out," said Petersen, who pitched a complete game three-hitter in the opener and three-plus innings in the nightcap.

“It was a big win for us,” Jefferson Coach Larry Niemeyer said. “They went up three and I thought it would be hard to come back, but the kids did it.”

Jefferson was the beneficiary of some leaky Xavier defense in the opener. The J-Hawks scored two runs in the second inning on three straight Saints errors and added another in the fifth with the aid of two Xavier errors. Sedlacek belted a three-run blast in the sixth.

“Jefferson hit the ball well, they always do and Petersen pitched well,” Xavier Coach Brian Erbe said. “As good as they are, we can’t give them that many extra outs.”

Sydney Galligan had an RBI single and Kristen Winter a solo home run for the Saints in the opener. Eighth grader Erin Drahozal hit a three-run home run and Jenna Schulte had a two-run double for Xavier in the nightcap.

J-Hawks held to 1 hit in loss to Burlington

Miranda Kramer and the 13th-ranked Burlington Grayhounds took it to the Jefferson J-Hawks, 6-0, Friday night in a softball game at the Ken Kaness Classic hosted by Jefferson.

Kramer struck out eight of the first nine J-Hawks. Sophomore Maddie Koolbeck was the only J-Hawk to put the ball in play. Koolbeck lined out to shortstop. Kramer continued to roll over the J-Hawks striking out 15 of 22 hitters en route to a one-hit shutout.

Junior Kailey Drake broke up the perfect game drawing a walk in the fourth inning. The walk sparked the J-Hawks’ best scoring chance, but they left the bases loaded.

Jefferson sophomore Amber Grimm broke up the no-hitter with one out in the sixth inning with a single to right field.

Former J-Hawk Allee Juco All-American

FORT DODGE - Iowa Central freshman shortstop Morgan Allee capped an amazing freshman season with NJCAA Division II First Team All-American softball honors this week.

The .524 average was second in the nation for anyone with more than 100 at bats. Allee finished with 19 doubles, four triples and six home runs. She collected 77 hits and scored 62 runs. Allee went 47-for-48 in stolen bases and had a single-game record for stolen bases with five against St. Louis-Meramec. Her 47 stolen bases are fifth all-time at Iowa Central.

J-Hawks bang out 28 hits in sweep of Prairie

After waiting an extra week to get its season underway, the Jefferson bats came out hot Tuesday night at Prairie High School. The J-Hawks pounded out 16 hits in a 12-0 six-inning win in game one, then held the Hawks off 9-5 behind 12 hits in the nightcap to sweep the Mississippi Valley Conference softball doubleheader.

“I was pleased with how we hit the ball tonight,” Jefferson Coach Larry Niemeyer said. “We have really been working on getting on top of the ball and we did a good job of that tonight.”

Jefferson (2-0) came into the night without having played a game. The J-Hawks' opener last week against Iowa City West was rained out. Prairie (2-1) was coming off a non-conference loss to Mount Vernon on Saturday.

The J-Hawks scored early and often to completely dominate the opener. Rachel Sedlacek, Kenna Fry, Maddie Koolbeck and Maddie Blietz had three hits apiece. Fry drove in three runs, Koolbeck and Blietz had two RBIs apiece.

The J-Hawks scored in every inning but the third and put up crooked numbers in each of the last three innings to end the game early. On the other side of the field, the Prairie Hawks could not get anything going against Jefferson ace Hannah Petersen. Despite battling an illness, Petersen tossed five strong innings, giving up no runs on only one hit.
