Butz helps Prairie 'dodge' Kennedy

Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Tyler Butz hurt his right shoulder this spring playing prom dodgeball.

True story. Prom dodgeball.

Butz is almost fully recovered now and played a major role Tuesday as the Hawks spanked Kennedy, 7-3, to beat the struggling Cougars on back-to-back nights.

Butz went 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a sacrifice bunt. He also played a solid game at second base, although he's itching to return to third base once his right shoulder is back to normal.

Prairie pitchers baffle Kennedy in 5-2 win

Spencer "Wild Thing" Dean got his nickname at Prairie High School the last few years when he had trouble throwing strikes in ballgames.

It used to be an insult. Now it's a compliment, because Spencer "Wild Thing" Dean is pitching very well for the Hawks this season.

"I don't mind it," he said Monday night. "Maybe last year it might have bothered me when I was having a rough game, but this year I've been pitching pretty well and helping the team out.

"I just laugh when I hear it now. It's pretty entertaining."

Dean pitched the seventh inning and got the save Monday as Prairie clipped the error-prone Kennedy Cougars, 5-2, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Prairie.

Cougars split twinbill with Cedar Falls

The Kennedy Cougars and Cedar Falls Tigers split a Mississippi Valley Conference baseball doubleheader at Kennedy Friday night by identical 5-2 scores.

Cedar Falls won the first game, 5-2, and Kennedy took the second game, 5-2.

Freshman Jackson Behn pitched six innings for the Cougars (2-4, 1-2) in the opener. He was touched for four runs, but only two of them were earned.

Cougars trimmed by IC West, 5-4

IOWA CITY - The Iowa City West Trojans scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday to defeat Kennedy, 5-4, in the opening game of a Mississippi Valley Conference baseball doubleheader in Iowa City.

The second game was suspended in the top of the second inning due to weather with Iowa City West holding an 8-0 lead.

Tony Maiers went 2-for-2 with two doubles for Kennedy (1-3, 0-1). Brock Skow went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Derek Jacobus was 2-for-2 and scored two runs.

Linn-Mar tops Kennedy for 3rd place

The Linn-Mar Lions defeated Kennedy, 7-4, in the consolation game for third place Thursday in the Bob Verbicek Metro Baseball Tournament at the Linn-Mar complex.

Ben Hilsenbeck allowed two unearned runs in five innings to collect the victory for Linn-Mar (2-1). He struck out five batters and allowed just two hits.

Austin Stroschein went 2-for-4 for Linn-Mar and scored two runs. Brandan Ollinger went 2-for-4 and Austin Banks drove in two runs.
