Warriors top Cougars for spot in finals

Zac Gillis singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday night to give Washington a 3-2 victory over Kennedy in the semifinals of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament.

The Warriors (2-0) will face Xavier (2-0) in the finals Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

“I was a bit nervous, but on the second pitch I got what I was looking for,” said Gillis. “I went oppo (opposite field) and we got the hit we needed to win the game.”

Cougars have many holes to fill

Kennedy went to the state baseball tournament again in 2012, continuing a run of excellence that put up 33 wins against just seven losses last season.

The Cougars, under the direction of Bret Hoyer, have developed a program to be admired.

Alex Hayden, Nick Appleget, Adam Lloyd and Cody Bell accounted for 30 of those 33 wins and 218 innings last season. Give Devon Jacobus and Zach Johnson 24 more innings and that would mean the seniors accounted for 93 percent of the innings pitched for Kennedy last season.

Bell, Josh Jahlas, Logan Ambrosy and Hayden all hit .386 or better. Jimmy Lizarraga hit .311 and Jacobus added a .310 average. Seniors accounted for 82 percent of the team’s hits, 80 percent of the RBIs, 71 percent of the runs and 100 percent of the home runs.

The graduating seniors will be sorely missed.

Lizarraga will play ball at Mount Mercy

Chico Lizarraga thought he'd be throwing passes for the Iowa Central Community College football team this fall. Instead, he's decided to throw out baserunners for the Mount Mercy University baseball team next spring.

Lizarraga, an all-state catcher and all-conference quarterback at Kennedy, has changed signals and will pursue a baseball career in college instead of playing football.

Lizarraga hit .320 with 26 RBIs for the Cougars as they compiled a 33-7 record and reached the semifinals of the Class 4A state tournament.
