Kennedy - Baseball

Hoyer's 600th win sends Cougars to state

Kennedy's win Wednesday night wasn't much different than the other 599 wins Coach Bret Hoyer has experienced.

With one major exception.

This one was for a berth in the Class 4A state baseball tournament.

Kennedy used nine hits and seven Cedar Falls errors to bury the Tigers, 9-1, in a Class 4A substate final at the Cougar diamond.

It was the 600th career win for Hoyer, his 536th in 20 years at Kennedy. He also had 64 wins in three seasons as coach at Iowa City Regina.

"No," Hoyer said, when asked if Wednesday's victory had any more significance than any other he has had. "But any team that takes you to the state tournament, you're really happy for those kids, that they get to experience that.

"That's the biggest thing to me. I'm really happy for them."

The Kennedy players were surprised that their coach had reached such a significant milestone without their knowing about it.

"That's a pretty big deal. That's pretty cool," senior Cody Bell said. "This is something special."

"I didn't even know that," senior Jimmy Lizarraga said. "I'm going to have to congratulate him. He's a great coach. It's a great accomplishment."

Hoyer won't turn 47 until August, leaving him many more seasons to pad his total.

"It's crazy," senior Logan Ambrosy said. "He has a great philosophy on baseball and I know he'll continue his success."

Kennedy is making its third straight state tournament appearance and will be pursuing its second state title in three seasons next week. The Cougars (32-6) face Linn-Mar (29-11) in the first round next Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Principal Park in Des Moines. The Lions beat Muscatine, 2-1, in eight innings to advance to the state tourney. Kennedy is seeded No. 2, Linn-Mar No. 7.

"We'll play whoever shows up," Hoyer said, before the Cougars' opponent was announced. "We'll go and give it a great effort because we've done that all year long."

Kennedy, top-seeded in the substate, survived a scare in its first round game last Friday night, a 2-0 win over sixth-seeded Waterloo East. Third-seeded Cedar Falls, meanwhile, had beaten Mason City, 4-1, and Xavier, 4-3, to reach the finals.

"I think we came out stronger this game," Lizarraga said. "We just didn't hit the ball (against East) as well as we did tonight. They (Cedar Falls) made some errors for us and we executed and (Alex) Hayden threw good.

"We had a lot more energy tonight. We were into the game a lot more. I think we were pumped up because we really want to get back to Des Moines."

Hayden allowed only two hits and one run over five innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out four.

"We know we are a better hitting team than what we came out (against East)," said Hayden, who ran his record to 10-2. "Our coach preaches pitching and defense, and that's what we've done two consecutive games, so we know if we do that we know we can give ourselves a good chance to win."

Kennedy scored single runs in the first and third innings in taking a 2-1 lead, then broke the game open in a five-run fifth. The Cougars had three hits in the frame and Cedar Falls committed three errors.

"That was a relief to our defense and our pitchers," said senior Josh Jahlas, who was headed back to Ames after the game to play in Saturday's Shrine Bowl football game. "When you get a decent lead it takes a lot of pressure off."

The speedy Jahlas and sophomore Derek Jacobus, a sprinter on the Kennedy track team, had three hits apiece for the Cougars.

"Cedar Falls was real good to us. We were able to get some pressure on them, get the ball on the ground and some of our guys that can run a little bit were on the bases at opportune times," Hoyer said.

Adam Lloyd and Nick Appleget each pitched an inning for Kennedy and both gave up a hit. The Cougars turned a nifty double play when Hayden, at second base, made a backhand flip to Jacobus at second, who fired to first to end the game with the bases loaded.

"We knew Cedar Falls was going to come ready to play, so we figured we needed to bring our A game," Bell said. "I was a little shaky in the field, but besides that, we were pretty good.

"We were jumping on a lot of fastballs. We were able to create some havoc."

Jahlas juggles Kennedy baseball and Shrine football

Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer gave Josh Jahlas a big hug before practice Tuesday night, but it wasn't because Jahlas has hit .450 this season and patrolled center field like a vacuum cleaner in spikes.

Hoyer appreciates what Jahlas has done for the second-ranked Cougars, but the embrace was a tribute to the senior's extra hustle this week as he juggles playing baseball for Kennedy in the substate tournament and practicing in Ames for the 40th Annual Shrine Bowl football game that will be played Saturday night.

Jahlas had a three-hour workout in pads Tuesday morning and a lighter one-hour practice Tuesday afternoon on a sweltering day in Ames, then shot back to Cedar Rapids to join the Cougars for practice and a team picture Tuesday night.

"Yeah, I had two workouts, and after the second workout I came straight here," said Jahlas, looking fresh as a daisy. "I'm having a lot of fun, but it's felt a lot longer than three days."

Kennedy (31-6) hosts Cedar Falls (22-18) in the Class 4A substate finals Wednesday night, with the winner claiming a berth in the state tournament next week in Des Moines.

Also Wednesday night, No. 9 Linn-Mar (28-11) entertains Muscatine (26-11) in the 4A substate finals at Linn-Mar and the Marion Indians (29-12) face No. 6 Benton Community (34-7) in the Class 3A substate finals at Vinton.

All of Wednesday's games are scheduled for 7 p.m.

Kennedy has a strong senior class that features Cody Bell, Alex Hayden, Logan Ambrosy, Devon Jacobus, Adam Lloyd, Chico Lizarraga and Nick Appleget. Jahlas is a member of that class and has taken his place as an equal member, but he wasn't always one of the stars when they played for the Junior Cougars as youngsters.

"I think that benefitted him," Hoyer said. "I remember him when he was younger, giving lessons to the Junior Cougars at Perfect Game and Josh with his glasses. He didn't have much of a stroke at that age.

"But he just absorbed everything and he's one of those kids you fall in love with. You really root for him."

Jahlas, 6-foot-1, 190, developed into a four-sport athlete at Kennedy in football, basketball, track and baseball. He'll play strong safety for the North squad in the Shrine Bowl Saturday night and will be joining the Iowa State Cyclones as an invited walk-on this season.

Jahlas helped Kennedy defeat Waterloo East in the substate opener Friday night, then headed to Ames for the football workouts. He spent Tuesday night at home in northeast Cedar Rapids and will return to Ames for football practice on Thursday.

"I've always been busy and it's a lot of fun for me," he said. "I'm enjoying the experiences I'm having.

"It's been pretty hot the last couple of days and I've been getting sunburned a little bit, because we've been outside the whole time. But yeah, I feel fine."

Hayden saves Cougars against Waterloo East

Unlike their doubleheader last month when Cedar Rapids Kennedy blew out Waterloo East twice, the Cougars had to work hard to eke out a 2-0 victory Friday night at home in the first round of the Class 4A substate tournament.

Kennedy ace Alex Hayden (9-2) was all but untouchable, limiting the Trojans to just three infield hits and a bloop single to left barely over the head of third baseman Cody Bell.

The crafty right-hander struck out 11 and walked only one batter in six innings. Nick Appleget pitched the seventh inning for the save.

“When Alex is on he’s awfully hard on the hitters,” said Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer. “And he was on tonight. He’s a pretty special pitcher.”

The second-ranked Cougars (31-6) earned a bye in the second round of the tournament Monday night and will host Xavier or Cedar Falls in the substate finals on Wednesday. Xavier hosts Cedar Falls on Monday night in Round 2.

A month ago, Kennedy throttled East 13-0 and 15-0 in a doubleheader at Waterloo.

“They walked us a bunch of times and were pretty generous to us,” Hoyer said. “Their pitcher did a nice tonight."

Trojan hurler Bryce Frost (2-2) turned in a solid six-inning performance, holding Kennedy’s hitters mostly in check.

With two outs in the first inning, Logan Ambrosy lofted a high fly that smacked off the wall in center field for a double. He scored on what would have been the third out on an overthrow to first base.

Then, in the fifth, Josh Jahlas led off with a single to right and stole second. With two outs, he scored from second on a bobbled ball by the second baseman.

“We didn’t hit real well tonight,” said Hayden, who collected one of Kennedy’s eight hits. “We didn’t bring our big bats and popped up too many times.”

Hoyer agreed.

“We need to shorten up and get more line drives and grounders through the infield,” he said. “There were too many fly balls.”

Still, Hayden saved the day.

“I felt good,” he said. “My curveball was pretty inconsistent, but I was hitting my spots with the fastball.”

He did throw a half-dozen pitches into the dirt, but catcher Jimmy “Chico” Lizarraga bailed him out each time by smothering the ball.

“I just tried to keep the ball in front of me,” said Lizarraga, who saved a sure run in the third by stopping an errant pitch with the bases loaded and one out.

The steady backstop considers himself part of the pitching staff.

“As a staff,” he said, “we just try to put our team in a position to win. We did that tonight by not giving up any runs.”

Cougars reach 30 victories with split

All Metro baseball teams set goals at the start of the season, some loftier than others, but they all do it.

Winning the Metro tournament is a good one. So is winning a conference title. A high ranking in the polls is always nice, and so is winning 30 games.

Kennedy has done it all this season.

The second-ranked Cougars won their 30th game Tuesday by blanking Pleasant Valley, 5-0, on a neat five-hit shutout by senior Nick Appleget on Senior Night.

Pleasant Valley took the nightcap, 4-3.

It's been another successful season for Kennedy, which will head into the Class 4A substate tournament Friday with a 30-6 mark and a share of the Mississippi Valley Conference title.

"Terrific. I'm very proud of them," Coach Bret Hoyer said. "It's a special group of seniors, and they've won a lot of games."

The Cougars have won six conference titles in the last 10 years and have reached 30 victories in five of those campaigns. But no matter how many regular-season goals they've attained, their biggest goal is still out there.

Kennedy won the Class 4A state title in 2010 and wants another. At the very least, the Cougars want to reach the state tournament in Des Moines and make a good showing.

"If they can handle the substate pressure and if they can focus on the things that are important ... hopefully they will and we'll be all right," Hoyer said.

Appleget raised his record to 8-0 and lowered his earned run average to 1.96 with his five-hit shutout. He's endured an injury-riddled career at Kennedy, but he's made his final year a season to remember.

"I feel really good," he said. "I think since this is my senior year, I kind of put it all on the line."

Appleget plans to attend the University of Northern Iowa and become a regular student, but that hasn't stopped other colleges from pursuing him for their baseball team. Mount Mercy University and other schools have not given up.

"I think about it, and I read the stuff they give me," he said. "I consider it and I talk to them, but ..."

His mind is made up. His formal baseball career will end with Kennedy's final game this season.

"I hope to end on a good note here. That's why I'm trying my hardest," he said.

Josh Jahlas drove in three runs for the Cougars in their 5-0 victory in the opener. Cody Bell and Andrew Johnson both went 2-for-3 with a double. Adam Lloyd scored three times.

Kennedy had its chances in the nightcap, but left the bases loaded in the first, third and fifth innings against Pleasant Valley (27-13). Bell went 2-for-3 again and Jahlas was 2-for-4. Lloyd (9-1) pitched three innings and suffered his first loss of the season.

Kennedy will host Waterloo East in the substate opener Friday at 7 p.m. The Cougars are the No. 1 seed in the substate, so if they beat Waterloo East they'll draw a second-round bye and play for the substate title next Wednesday.

Hoyer said Alex Hayden (8-2, 1.15 ERA) will be the starting pitcher Friday night.

Cougars finish No. 2 in baseball poll

Cedar Rapids Kennedy remains ranked at No. 2 in the final Class 4A baseball poll released Monday by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Linn-Mar dropped one spot to No. 9. The Lions swapped positions with North Scott. The Lancers swept a doubleheader from Linn-Mar on Saturday.

Kennedy and Linn-Mar finished the Mississippi Valley Conference season tied for first place in the Mississippi Division. Valley Division winner Iowa City West is ranked No. 5.
