2 Johnsons help No. 1 Cougars trim Prairie

The Kennedy baseball team called on Johnson & Johnson to ease its pain Monday night.

Andrew Johnson delivered a key triple and Zach Johnson collected a gutsy win in relief as the top-ranked Cougars trimmed Prairie, 5-4, on Junior Cougars Night at Kennedy.

Andrew Johnson tied the game, 4-4, with a triple down the right-field line in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.

Zach Johnson (not the golfer) wriggled out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh inning to give Kennedy (9-1, 4-1) the Mississippi Valley Conference victory.

The Prairie Hawks had runners on second and third in the top of the seventh with one out when Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer gave Bryce Alberts an intentional walk to load the bases. It was a risky maneuver, because it gave Johnson no room for error on the mound. Another walk would have forced in the tying run.

"That kind of got me thinking a little bit," Johnson admitted. "But he (Hoyer) knows what he's doing out there. I figured he wouldn't put me in a bad position. I just knew I had to throw strikes."

Johnson went to a 3-2 count against Tyler Votroubek with the sacks loaded and one out. Votroubek fouled a fastball straight back, and Kennedy assistant coach Jake Waddle told catcher Chico Lizarraga to call for a curveball on the next pitch.

Johnson bent the ball over the outside corner and got Votroubek looking for the second out.

"A 3-2 curveball and he spots it on the outside corner with the tying run on third base," Prairie Coach Matt Thede said wistfully. "That's a tough pitch. I don't care what level you're at. I mean, that is a tough pitch anywhere. You tip your hat to him."

Johnson then got Dylan Pond to hit a ground ball to shortstop Derek Jacobus, who fielded it cleanly and stepped on second base to end the game.

Johnson relieved Nick Appleget in the top of the sixth with nobody out and a runner at first base with Kennedy trailing, 4-3. The Hawks put runners at second and third with two outs, threatening to increase their lead, but Johnson fanned Ty Mougin to end the inning.

Johnson, a senior, said he enjoys pitching in relief with the game on the line. "I like it," he said. "It puts all that pressure on me, but it's fun."

Zach Johnson now has a victory and a save this season.

Andrew Johnson began Monday's game with only three hits in 15 at-bats for a .200 batting average, but he went 3-for-3 with two singles and the key triple to raise his mark to .333.

Johnson came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth with Derek Jacobus on second base with one out and Kennedy needing a run to tie the game. He stepped into the batter's box against Alberts, who pitched the whole game for Prairie (7-5, 3-2).

"He was pitching me first-pitch outside every time," said Johnson. "I saw a fastball and smoked it. I've never had a bigger hit than that in my career."

Johnson scored on a passed ball for a 5-4 lead, then the other Johnson (they're not related) took care of matters in the top of the seventh on the mound.

Kennedy took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Prairie made three errors, but the Hawks tied the game 3-3 in the third on a three-run homer by Brayton Carlson. Tyler Butz gave the Hawks a 4-3 lead in the fifth with an RBI single.

The same two teams meet Tuesday at Prairie at 7 p.m.

Cougars sweep Tigers as pitchers shine

CEDAR FALLS -- The Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars got exceptional pitching Friday night and swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Cedar Falls.

Alex Hayden and Zach Johnson combined on a one-hitter with seven strikeouts as the top-ranked Cougars captured the opener, 12-0, in six innings.

Adam Lloyd and Devon Jacobus combined on a three-hitter with seven strikeouts as Kennedy took the nightcap, 10-0, in six innings.

The Cougars raised their records to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the MVC. Cedar Falls fell to 6-4 overall and 1-3 in the MVC.

Bell helps No. 1 Cougars trim Marshalltown

Cody Bell swings a good stick, whether he's on a golf course or a baseball field. Either way, he can belt the ball a long way.

Bell smashed a long two-run homer Monday as No. 1 Kennedy defeated Marshalltown, 9-7, on a warm Memorial Day afternoon at the Kennedy diamond.

Marshalltown scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull within 7-6, but Bell gave the Cougars (5-0) some breathing room when he slugged his long homer to left-center in the bottom of the sixth.

"They were pitching me outside the whole game, so I tried to look for one outside," he said. "It got a lot of the plate and I was able to hit it deep."

Bell will be headed to the University of Northern Iowa to join the men's golf team this summer, but for now it's all baseball. He doesn't like to mix baseball and golf at the same time, because they require different swings.

No. 1 Cougars belt Burlington, 14-1

BURLINGTON - The top-ranked Kennedy baseball team got more exceptional pitching Saturday and blasted Burlington, 14-1, in a non-conference game in Burlington.

Alex Hayden (2-0) tossed four strong innings and Zach Johnson pitched the fifth and final frame for Kennedy. The Cougars (4-0) have allowed only one earned run in 24 innings this season for a team ERA of 0.29.

Hayden struck out four batters, allowed two hits, did not walk anyone and was touched for an unearned run. He has fanned 18 batters in 10 1/3 innings.

Hayden also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Devon Jacobus went 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Burlington (3-2) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but Kennedy scored six runs in the third inning, two runs in the fourth and six more runs in the fifth. Brock Skow and Adam Lloyd had two RBIs apiece.

Appleget shines as Cougars claim Metro title

Nick Appleget left Veterans Memorial Stadium Wednesday night with bags of ice taped to his left elbow and right shoulder, but that's nothing.

His whole body has taken a beaten during his career at Cedar Rapids Kennedy. He's had three operations on his left knee, including two for torn ACLs and one for a torn meniscus.

"All in three years," he said. "I haven't missed a baseball season yet, though. I had to give up all the other sports, so I'm banking on this one. It's the only one I've got left."

Appleget began his final prep baseball season in grand style Wednesday in the championship game of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Tournament, despite getting plunked by a pitch on his left elbow that caused numbness and left a nice little bump.

Appleget carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning as the top-ranked Cougars thumped Prairie, 9-0, to win their third straight Metro title and seventh in the last 12 years.

Jason Velvick lined a clean single to right field with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to end the no-hitter, but by then the Cougars were sitting on a fat 8-0 lead. Appleget got the final out in the sixth and retired for the night with nine strikeouts, one walk and one hit.

Zach Johnson pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh with two more strikeouts, giving the Kennedy pitchers 11 for the contest.

Until recently, Appleget wasn't sure if he'd be able to pitch in the Metro tournament due to soreness in his knee.

"I've had a rough past week with my knee. I couldn't walk up the stairs last week. My bad left knee," he said ruefully.

He's also had "issues" with his right elbow this year, but looked good and felt good against the Prairie Hawks. He threw his low-80's fastball and curveball for strikes and needed only 67 pitches in six innings.

Appleget had a tough act to follow in the Metro tournament after Alex Hayden and Adam Lloyd pitched exceptional games in the first two rounds for Kennedy. Hayden struck out 14 batters and allowed only two hits in 6.1 innings when the Cougars blanked Washington 4-0 in the first round, then Lloyd allowed only two hits in a five-inning 12-2 verdict over Linn-Mar in the semifinals.

"These three seniors have been terrific," said Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer.

Kennedy pitchers have struck out 27 batters in 19 innings this season. They've allowed only five hits, six walks and two runs (one earned). The team earned run average is a miniscule 0.37 so far.

"They're throwing good and they're hitting their spots and keeping hitters off-balance," said Kennedy catcher Chico Lizarraga, who has been a rock behind the plate. "It's fun. The umpire loves it, too, because they just throw strike after strike after strike."

Kennedy assistant coach Jake Waddle calls the pitches, Lizarraga flashes the signs and the pitchers deliver. "I think they have a high degree of confidence and comfort in Chico Lizarraga as their catcher and coach Waddle calling pitches," noted Hoyer.

The antipated showdown between the No. 1 Cougars and No. 9 Prairie Hawks got out of hand early. Kennedy scored seven unearned runs in the second inning thanks to two infield errors, three walks, a hit batter (Appleget) and a two-run single by Cody Bell against Prairie junior Mitch Adams.

Appleget kept mowing them down as the game went along, and the only question was whether the Hawks would get a base hit before it ended.

This will be Appleget's final season of organized baseball. He plans to enroll at the University of Northern Iowa and major in graphic arts and design. He's already won awards in those areas and is looking forward to college.

"No baseball," he said. "I'm giving my body a break. I love the game, but I'm not ready to have a knee replacement."
