Appleget, Taylor help Kennedy sweep Waterloo East

The talent-rich Cedar Rapids Kennedy baseball team got a little richer Thursday night.

Nick Appleget and Colin Taylor stepped into major roles and helped the ninth-ranked Cougars sweep Waterloo East, 6-3 and 11-1, in a Mississippi Valley Conference twinbill at Kennedy.

Appleget pitched a strong game in the nightcap, while Taylor contributed with his bat and arm in both games.

Appleget's career has been hindered by two major knee operations, but the right-hander made his first start on the mound and baffled East (4-16, 1-9) with a crackling fastball and sharp curve.

Appleget, a 6-foot-3 junior, struck out nine batters, allowed four hits and walked two in the six-inning game. East's only run was unearned.

Appleget had pitched only 5 2/3 innings in relief prior to Thursday, so he more than doubled his workload against Waterloo East.

"I feel better now that I know I can pitch that long, because I didn't know," he said. "My arm was kind of sore after throwing just one or two innings before, so I didn't know if I could go that many.

"It felt really good as the night went on," he said. "It (the fastball) continued to get faster, and my curveball started curving more."

Appleget had major knee operations as a freshman and sophomomre and had an arthoscopic procedure prior to this season. He wears a brace on his left knee, but he looked strong Thursday.

"I was really impressed. I'm very happy," Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer said. "He's shown that before in short outings, but we didn't know how he would do in an extended outing. That was really impressive, what he did tonight."

Appleget (1-0) has struck out 16 batters in 11 2/3 innings and his earned run average is a tidy 0.60.

Taylor also gave Kennedy (16-4, 9-1) a lift. He played an important role for the Cougars last year as a relief pitcher and hit .368 as a part-time DH/pinch hitter, but he hadn't gotten many chances to swing the bat this season and was 0-for-5 prior to Thursday.

Taylor went 4-for-7 in the twinbill with a home run and three RBIs. He had a key hit in the first game to ignite a five-run rally as the Cougars rallied for the 6-3 win, and he went 3-for-4 with his homer in the nightcap.

"It felt really good," Taylor said. "It was the first time I got to start a game (as the DH). I'm glad I capitalized on it. I feel good at the plate now."

Taylor got his chance to hit because Austin Benson and Josh Jahlas were not available. Benson, a .444 hitter, had a college commitment. Jahlas, a part-time starter, was participating in a football camp at Iowa State. Taylor filled the void.

"That's what you like to see," Hoyer remarked. "He took advantage of the opportunity to show us what he can do."

Taylor also pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the opener with three straight strikeouts to help preserve Kennedy's 6-3 victory.

Waterloo East is 4-16 overall and 1-9 in the MVC, but the Trojans are a pesky team when Nate Sahr is pitching. Sahr began the day with a 3-1 record and 2.28 ERA, and he handcuffed the Cougars for four innings in the opener before Kennedy broke through in the fifth.

David Yancey smacked a three-run homer in the fifth inning, snapping a 3-3 tie and giving the Cougars their 6-3 advantage.

Cody Bell pitched five innings for Kennedy in the opener and got the win. He allowed three runs, but all were unearned. Bell went 2-for-2 in the nightcap with three RBIs.

Austin Christensen was 2-for-4 in the doubleheader for Kennedy and is batting .643 for the season (36 for 56).

Kennedy clips No.6 Davenport Central

DAVENPORT - The Cedar Rapids Kennedy baseball team finished a tough five-game road trip Tuesday night with a 7-4 victory over Davenport Central at Brady Street Stadium.

The Cougars played five games in four days, all on the road, all against ranked teams and finished with a 3-2 record.

Kennedy (14-4) lost a doubleheader at No.7 Fort Dodge on Saturday, but swept No.8 Dubuque Hempstead on Monday and took care of No.6 Davenport Central on Tuesday.

"I'm very pleased going 3-and-2 over the five games against ranked teams, all on the road," Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer remarked. "Tonight was very impressive. We are starting to do some pretty good things."

The two losses at Fort Dodge dropped the Cougars from No.1 to No.9 in the Class 4A poll this week.

Adam Lloyd, Austin Benson, Nick Appleget and David Yancey shared the pitching for the Cougars against Davenport Central (9-2). Lloyd got the victory and Yancey notched his fifth save.

Kennedy trailed, 2-1, after three innings, but the Cougars scored four runs in the fourth inning for a 5-2 lead. Matt Maiers, Josh Jahlas, Benson and Terrell Sykes had RBIs in the decisive frame.

Jahlas, Benson and Griffin Michael had two hits for Kennedy. Cody Bell hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to give the Cougars a 7-3 lead.

Austin Christensen went 1-for-2 for Kennedy and is hitting .654 for the season.

Kennedy bounces back, sweeps twinbill at Hempstead

DUBUQUE - Griffin Michael pitched a one-hit shutout and Austin Christensen socked his 11th home run Monday as top-ranked Kennedy swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Dubuque Hempstead.

Kennedy won the opener, 6-3, and grabbed the nightcap, 11-0, in five innings on Michael's one-hitter.

The Cougars (13-4, 7-1) dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Fort Dodge on Saturday, but they bounced back with two key MVC wins on the road.

Christensen (4-0) pitched six innings in the first game and got the victory, allowing seven hits and three runs. He struck out seven batters and walked three. David Yancey pitched the seventh inning for his fourth save.

Christensen went 3-for-4 in the opener. Terrell Sykes, Cody Bell, Matt Maiers and Logan Ambrosy all had two hits for Kennedy.

Michael (3-1) struck out five batters and walked one in the second game, which was stopped after the fifth inning by the 10-run rule.

Sykes, Ambrosy and Benson all had two hits for the Cougars in the nightcap. Austin Benson drove in three runs. Sykes and Christensen both homered and had two RBIs. Christensen leads the state with 11 homers in 17 games.

Christensen went 4-for-5 in the doubleheader and raised his batting average to .660 (33 for 50).

FORT DODGE - The top-ranked Kennedy High School baseball team was knocked off its perch Saturday by eighth-ranked Fort Dodge.

Austin Christensen is Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year

Kennedy's power-hitting southpaw pitcher Austin Christensen has been named the Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year in baseball.

Christensen is batting .684 with 10 home runs and 27 RBIs through 13 games. He also  is 3-0 on the mound.

Christensen is Kennedy's career home run leader with 33. His 24 wins as a pitcher are two shy of the Kennedy career record held by Danny Bales.

Christensen is the fourth Metro athlete to be named a Gatorade Player of the Year this year and the second from Kennedy. Linn-Mar's Kiah Stokes was a two-time winner in girls basketball, Jefferson's Jarrod Uthoff was chosen in boys basketball and Kennedy junior Gabe Christianson was named in boys soccer.

Christensen has signed a national letter of intent to play baseball at Nebraska. He was not chosen in the recent Major League Baseball first-year player draft.
