5-run 1st carries J-Hawks past Cougars

Jefferson plated five big runs in the home half of the first inning and downed visiting Kennedy, 7-3, in Mississippi Valley Conference baseball Monday night.

The J-Hawks (9-25, 7-16) squared up on five first inning line drives that included a three-run double by Layne Sullivan and a two-run double by Lucas Larson.

“The pitch I hit was a fastball right down the pipe,” said Sullivan. “I hit it hard and it hit a gap to clear the bases.”

Cam Frazier, Spencer Hunt, and Ky Kramer all collected two hits for the J-Hawks.

No-name Cougars stun No.4 Johnston

Bret Hoyer has won 553 games and a state title during his career as the baseball coach at Kennedy High School, so it's usually not a great surprise when the Cougars upset a ranked team at home.

This one, however, belongs in the "Holy Cow!" department for startling developments.

The Cougars stunned No.4 Johnston, 6-5, Saturday afternoon with an improbable concoction of players that had Kennedy fans scratching their heads and wondering "Who's he?"

Young Cougars swept by No.1 Ankeny

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy baseball team may have the youngest pitching rotation in Class 4A this year.

Coach Bret Hoyer has three sophomores and a freshman in the four-man rotation, a highly unusual situation for the Cougars, but the kids have done all right.

The young Cougars battled top-ranked Ankeny in a doubleheader at the Kennedy field Tuesday night and were saddled with a pair of losses, 7-4 and 6-1, but Hoyer likes what he's seen of his Kiddie Corps on the mound this year.

Baseball tourney pairings announced

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released the pairings for the postseason baseball tournaments in Class 3A and 4A on Tuesday and four Metro teams got first-round home dates.

Xavier got the top seed in substate 3 and will host No.6 seed Waterloo East when the Class 4A tournament opens on July 19. Prairie is the No.2 seed in the same substate and the Hawks will host No.5 seed Waterloo West.

Linn-Mar is the No.2 seed in substate 6 and the Lions will host Washington. Third-seeded Kennedy will host Iowa City High. Sixth-seeded Jefferson travels to No.1 seeded Iowa City West.

The highest remaining seed in each substate after the first round gets a bye into the substate finals.

Surging Cougars sweep No.10 Saints

Two teams that had been gathering momentum in June collided Monday night in the Battle of 42nd Street at Kennedy High School.

Kennedy kept its momentum. Xavier lost theirs.

The surging Cougars swept the No.10 Saints, 2-1 in nine innings and 4-3, in a Mississippi Valley Conference twinbill.

Both games were well-pitched, but the opener was truly a pitching duel between Xavier’s Mitch Keller and Kennedy’s Zack Daniels (who gave way to David King in the ninth).
