MSR sails past 1 million page views for 2015

If you happened to click on the Metro Sports Report website at 9:03 Sunday morning, you may have been the person who helped us reach 1 million page views for the 2015 calendar year.

If it was you, thanks very much.

Actually, two of you may have clicked on Metro Sports Report.com at 9:03 a.m., because we average about two new pageviews every minute. One of you may have been No. 999,999 and one of you may have been No. 1,000,000, but we'll never know for sure.

Either way, your support is greatly appreciated.

Carl Whiting, our director of advertising and website guru, was keeping a sharp eye for the millionth pageview this morning. He knew it would happen sometime Sunday, but did not know exactly when.

When he checked our analytics at 9 a.m., we were sitting at 999,990, so he knew the time was near. And sure enough, right before his eyes, the total climbed rapidly.

"Hey, this is pretty cool," he thought as he watched the numbers grow.

Carl did not have to wait long. It took only three minutes, to be exact, to get 10 more pageviews and reach 1,000,000.

By 5 p.m. Sunday, our number had reached 1,000,934 and was continuing to climb. By the time Mike Condon, our night editor Sunday, posted this column at 6 o'clock, the number was better than 1,001,000. And if you're reading this column for the first time Monday, we're probably well beyond that and streaking toward 1,050,000 by the end of the year.

This is the fourth straight year we've had more than 1 million pageviews on the Metro Sports Report. We launched the website in 2011 and had 750,000 in Year 1 as we got started, and we've been above 1 million every year since.

The grand total as of 5 p.m. Sunday was 5,106,252.

We're delighted that you keep coming back to the MSR for your daily helping of local sports news. There was nothing especially "big" on the calendar Saturday, but we'd like to think we offered an attractive selection for you Saturday night and during the day on Sunday.

Our lead story was about the Cedar Rapids Prairie wrestling team winning the Five Seasons Duals at Kennedy High School Saturday. We approached the story from the eyes of new Prairie Coach Kane Thompson, who battled a wide range of emotions on a day that began with his grandfather's funeral in Brooklyn, Iowa, and ended with his team winning a major title.

We also covered the Kirkwood men's basketball team Saturday and made its convincing victory over Black Hawk College our No. 2 story on the website. Our angle in that story was Al'Tavius Jackson, a seldom-used reserve who came off the bench to spark the Eagles with 18 points.

We also had stories on all five of the prep basketball games that were played Saturday, all four of the wrestling tournaments, two women's basketball games, two other men's basketball games, two swimming meets and the RoughRiders.

Cindy Petersen, our Saturday night editor, and I worked until 1 a.m. Saturday night/Sunday morning to put the package together and we're very happy with the results. We feel it was a comprehensive package, and our readers seemed to agree with the way they flocked to the site for the latest news.

Margaret O'Banion and Ken Gilchrist, two of our talented and dedicated photographers, contributed excellent pictures to the package, as they always do, and of course you can always purchase their pictures at a nominal cost on our Photo Gallery.

I get a little crabby once in awhile when a coach neglects to send in their results, but we regularly get 90 percent (or more) of the reports in a timely basis to help us write our stories. The Metro coaches and college sports information directors are a great help and we cannot thank them enough.

There are only 2 1/2 weeks left in 2015, and then we'll turn the page and dive into the New Year. We launched the MSR website on Jan. 3, 2011, so we'll celebrate our anniversary with a nod to our readers and keep moving forward.

Thanks again and keep reading.
