Hawks can't handle Uthoff, J-Hawks

Jarrod Uthoff scored 25 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked five shots to lead No. 10 Jefferson past stubborn Prarie, 50-41, Thursday night in the J-Hawks' regular season finale at Prairie.

The final score was much closer than anticipated, although the J-Hawks (15-5, 11-5 MVC) were coming into the game off a hard-fought loss to No. 1 Linn-Mar on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Prairie was trying to end a 10-game losing streak.  The Hawks (3-17, 2-13) get another chance to snap the skid Friday night when they host Dubuque Hempstead in a makeup game to end the regular season.

Hawks ousted from girls tourney

It wasn’t always pretty, but Kennedy did what it had to in order to advance, winning 66-60 at Prairie on Wednesday night in the first round of the Class 4A girls regional tournament.

The Cougars (9-13) led by as many as 11 points in the second half but the Hawks (4-18) refused to give up, clawing their way back into the game. Kennedy's lead was only 51-49 with 6 minutes left, but the Cougars had an answer for every Prairie run and were able to fend off the Hawks.

“Prairie played outstanding and hard,” Kennedy Coach Dennis Roloff said. “They play an aggressive game and if they don’t get called they are in every game.”

The Hawks just couldn’t stop Kennedy’s offensive duo of  junior Courtney Strait and senior Olivia Meier, who led all scorers with 25 and 19 points, respectively.

“Those two, we could not stop the basketball,” Prairie Coach Steve Doser said of Strait and Meier. “We really struggled stopping penetration and that killed us. Good players make plays and they did.”

Cedar Falls races past Prairie boys

CEDAR FALLS -- No. 8 Cedar Falls built a 20-point lead by halftime and cruised past Prairie, 67-37, Tuesday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball game.

James Harrington scored 20 points to lead Cedar Falls (15-4, 13-2 MVC). The Tigers clinched the MVC Valley Division title.

Jacob Aune and Brandon Lafferty had 11 points apiece for Prairie (3-16, 2-12).

Cedar Falls hosts No. 7 Kennedy Thursday.  Prairie hosts No. 10 Jefferson Thursday and unranked Hempstead Friday.

Kadolph rolls hot, but Hawks fall to Linn-Mar

Abbey Stenersen had the hot hand, rolling a 263 high game and a 393 series, and teammate McKenzie Routhe fired a 399 series to lead Linn-Mar past Prairie, 2670-2513, Monday in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls bowling meet at the Cedar Rapids Bowling Center.

The meet was the regular-season finale for both teams.

Routhe had a 229 game, Nicole McMahon a 221 and Stacey Schwarzenstein a 212 for Linn-Mar (7-7, 6-5 MVC).

Jamie Kadolph rolled a high game of 256 and series of 449 for Prairie (5-9, 4-7). Brittany Meyers had a 204 high game.

Linn-Mar will compete in the Class 2A regional tournament Saturday at May City Bowl. Prairie is in the Marshalltown regional.
