Prairie boys trim Hempstead, 5-4

DUBUQUE - The Cedar Rapids Prairie boys tennis team swept all three doubles matches Tuesday and trimmed Dubuque Hempstead, 5-4, in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet in Dubuque.

Blake Larsson and Conor Wiesender won at No. 1 doubles for Prairie, 6-4, 6-0.

Freshmen help Prairie kick Kennedy

Three freshmen helped the Cedar Rapids Prairie boys soccer team maintain its perfect record Tuesday night.

Freshman Spencer Young scored the first goal of his varsity career as the seventh-ranked Hawks blanked No. 8 Kennedy, 1-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference match at Prairie.

Matt Walter and Boston Riley, who are also freshmen, collected the assists on Young's game-winning tally in the second half.

Senior Alec Balta pitched another shutout in goal for Prairie as the Hawks raised their records to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the conference.

Prairie has outscored its eight opponents, 45-0, this season.

Kennedy fell to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the league.

Hellweg sparks No.6 Cougars by Prairie

Olivia Hellweg fired in two goals Tuesday night as the sixth-ranked Kennedy soccer team defeated Prairie, 5-1, in a Mississippi Valley Conference match at Kennedy.

Sydney Hayden, Kasey Dekko and Olivia Weigel also scored for the Cougars. Alyssa Drewelow had two assists for Kennedy. Morgan Petsche and Hayden also collected assists.

Cayla Renwick scored with an assist from Adelaide Bayne for Prairie.

Prairie girls roll by Hempstead

Vale Caro defeated Morgan Streff, 10-1, at No. 1 singles Tuesday as Prairie defeated Hempstead 8-1 in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls tennis meet at Prairie.

Karleigh Schilling, Michelle Grenn, Anna Postinkov and Lauren O'Brien also won their singles matches for the Hawks.

Prairie, Linn-Mar climb in soccer poll

Linn-Mar and Prairie each climbed a spot in this week's Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association's Class 3A rankings.

The Lions (5-1) moved from fifth to fourth after their double overtime win over Kennedy. Prairie (7-0), jumped from ninth to seventh. Kennedy (4-3) dropped from sixth to eighth while Washington (3-5) remained at No. 14. Johnston tops the 3A poll

In 2A, Xavier (5-1), remained in the No. 2 spot behind Norwalk.
