Prairie girls net perfect day

DUBUQUE - The Cedar Rapids Prairie girls tennis team cruised to a pair of 9-0 victories over Dubuque Senior and Dubuque Wahlert Saturday in Mississippi Valley Conference meets in Dubuque.

Vale Caro, Magui Caro, Karleigh Schilling, Shannon Costigan, Michelle Grenn and Anna Postnikov posted comfortable victories in both of their singles matches.

Vale Caro won 10-2 and 10-0 at No. 1 singles.

J-Hawks turn in 4 state-best efforts

The Jefferson J-Hawks took advantage of the good weather Saturday and posted four state-best efforts at the Kennedy coed track meet at Kingston Stadium.

Jasmine Blue took over the No. 1 spot in the 100 meter dash at 12.22 seconds and Abbie Ranschau moved to the top of the chart in the 100 hurdles in 14.87 seconds to help the Jefferson girls win the team championship by 50 points.

The Jefferson girls also lowered their own state-best mark in the 4x100 relay to 48.38 seconds with Lucy Schneekloth, Ranschau, Morgan Meese and Blue sharing the baton.

Merje' Bokoyo from the Jefferson boys track team was clocked in 10.86 seconds in the 100 meter dash, matching the best time in the state this year.

Dubuque schools sweep Prairie boys

The Cedar Rapids Prairie boys tennis team dropped a pair of Mississippi Valley Conference meets to visitors from Dubuque Saturday.

Dubuque Senior clipped the Hawks, 6-3. Dubuque Wahlert blanked Prairie, 9-0.

Brandon Bruhn and Joseph Schmitt won their singles matches against Dubuque Senior.

Prairie runs 2nd at Ames meet

AMES - Cedar Rapids Prairie won seven events and finished in second place at the Ames Invitational boys track meet Friday.

Ames nipped Prairie for the title, 134 to 132, in the five-team field.

Trevor Northrup (100), Chris Oehlert (1600), Robert Laue (3200), Keagan Pinter (110 hurdles) and Marty Borseth (high jump) won events for Prairie. The Hawks also captured the 4x400 relay and 1600 medley relay.

TEAM STANDINGS

1. Ames 134, 2. Prairie 132, 3. Ankeny 122, 4. Waterloo West 72, 5. Marshalltown 42.

Xavier girls win MVC golf meet

Melanie Wertzberger grabbed medalist honors with a 13-over-par 48 Friday as the Xavier Saints defeated Prairie and Jefferson in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at St. Andrews Golf Course.

Amy Olberding of Xavier was the runner-up with a 49.
