Prairie, Jefferson hosting regional duals

The Cedar Rapids Prairie and Jefferson wrestling teams will host Class 3A regional dual meet tournaments on Feb. 11 and the Linn-Mar Lions will be on the road in Bettendorf that night.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association expanded the regional tournament from 16 teams to 24 teams this year. The new format rewarded first-round byes to the top eight teams in the IWCOA rankings. Those eight teams will act as hosts and will wrestle in the regional finals that night, following a semifinal match between teams that are ranked anywhere from No. 9 to No. 24.

No. 14 Dubuque Hempstead and No. 21 Fort Madison will meet in the semifinals at Prairie, with the winner facing the No. 4 Prairie Hawks in the regional finals.

No. 12 Western Dubuque and No. 24 Ankeny Centennial will meet in the semifinals at Jefferson, with the winner facing the No. 7 Jefferson J-Hawks in the regional finals.

Prairie girls tumble to Bettendorf in OT

The Bettendorf girls basketball team handed Prairie a 61-57 overtime loss Saturday at Prairie.

Emilie Rotter scored 14 points for the Prairie Hawks (2-13). Halle Person added 13 points and Jenna Wagemester had nine points.

Ashton Glaus made 13-of-18 free throws for Bettendorf and finished with 17 points.

Ames boys handle Prairie 62-56

Jalen Rima scored 19 points to lead the Prairie boys basketball team in a 62-56 loss to Ames on Saturday at Prairie.

After a 9-9 first quarter, the Little Cyclones pulled away for a 32-26 halftime lead and the Prairie Hawks were unable to come entirely back.

Mitch Lorenz chipped in 11 points for Prairie (6-8).

Colby Shane powered Ames (9-5) with 22 points.

Prairie rallies by Waterloo West

Cal Clark and Mitch Lorenz scored 14 points apiece Friday night as Prairie rallied for a 72-62 victory over Waterloo West in a Mississippi Valley Conference basketball game at Prairie.

Ben Boldt scored 12 points and Max Drahoas had 10 points for Prairie (6-7). The Hawks trailed by nine points at halftime.

WATERLOO WEST (62): Sehic 2 0-0 5, Conrey 6 4-6 18, Spates 4 2-2 11, Pepin 0 2-2 2, Samardzic 2 0-0 4, Schultz 2 0-0 4, Moore 1 0-0 2, Caddell 5 2-3 12, Harris-Anderson 1 0-0 2, Howze 1 0-0 2. Totals 24 10-14 62.

Prairie girls claim 2nd victory

WATERLOO - Makenzie Stoffer poured in 18 points and Emily Rotter added 14 Friday night as Prairie clipped Waterloo West, 57-49, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game in Waterloo.

The Hawks raised their record to 2-12 with the victory. Waterloo West fell to 3-12.

Aliyah Robinson led Waterloo West with 20 points. Tahya Campbell scored 18.

PRAIRIE (57): Moenk 1 0-0 3, Altenhofen 1 0-2 3, Rotter 4 5-6 14, Adams 1 1-1 3, Usher 0 4-5 4, Wagemester 2 0-0 4, Person 1 4-4 6, Stoffer 8 2-5 18, Herold 1 0-0 2. Totals 19 16-23 57.
