Carlson headed to Texas A&M-Kingsville

Cedar Rapids Prairie graduate Brayton Carlson will continue his college baseball career at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

Carlson, an outfielder, hit .298 with one home run and 13 RBIs as a sophomore at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington this season.

Southeastern compiled a 45-22 record and played in the NJCAA Division II World Series after winning the Region XI tournament. The Blackhawks were fourth in the final rankings.

Texas A&M-Kingsville is an NCAA Division II school.

No.5 Saints, No.9 Lions knocked out

The Xavier Saints and Linn-Mar Lions were both upset in the semifinals of the regional softball tournament Saturday night at home.

The Saints, ranked No.5 in Class 4A, were blanked by Clear Creek-Amana, 2-0, on a three-hit shutout by Lexi Kinnaird.

The Lions, ranked No.9 in Class 5A, were upended by Dubuque Senior, 2-0, on a three-hit shutout by A.D. Medinger.

Cedar Rapids Prairie's game in the Class 5A playoffs against No.7 Pleasant Valley was suspended by rain in the second inning with the Hawks leading, 2-0. It will be resumed Monday at 6 p.m. at Prairie.

Prairie Hawks sweep City High

IOWA CITY - The Cedar Rapids Prairie baseball team took out some of its frustrations on the Iowa City High Little Hawks Friday.

Prairie swept City High, 14-0 in five innings and 7-2, in Iowa City.

Prairie raised its records to 12-20 overall and 10-14 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Trey Beckman went 3-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs in the first game. Jalen Rima went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Corbin Day was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs. Cal Clark had two hits, Drew Yanecek drove in two runs and Keenan Kilpatrick scored twice.

Yanecek pitched a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts.

Ben Boldt went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Prairie in the nightcap. Clark and Nick Benson also drove in two runs. Nic Mougin scored twice.

Mougin pitched five innings for the win. Ben Milks tossed two scoreless frames for a save.

No. 10 Prairie splits with Hempstead

DUBUQUE - The 10th-ranked Prairie softball team traded a pair of tight victories with Dubuque Hempstead Monday.

Prairie took the first game, 5-4. Gabi Carter went 2-for-3 wtih two RBIs and Kristen Wahlert was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Hempstead claimed the second game, 7-5. Natalie Rumer went 2-for-4 with four RBIs for Prairie. Wahlert and Amanda Stecklein were 2-for-3. Halle Lueck scored three runs.

Prairie scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning of the nightcap, but the rally ended there.

Prairie splits with Dubuque Senior

The Cedar Rapids Prairie baseball team came within three outs of sweeping Dubuque Senior Monday night, but the Hawks had to settle for a split.

Prairie took the first game, 8-6, and had a 5-3 lead in the seventh inning of the nightcap before suffering a 7-5 setback at Prairie.

Trey Beckman went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs for the Hawks in the first game. Jalen Rima was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.

Keenan Kilpatrick drove in two runs for Prairie in the nightcap. Corbin Day had two hits for the Hawks.
