Baker holds off Mount Mercy men

A furious rally fell a little short for the Mount Mercy men's  basketball team Saturday afternoon.

Baker trimmed the Mustangs, 82-78, in a Heart of America Conference  game that came down to the final seconds at the Hennessey Recreation  Center.

Mount Mercy trailed by 22 points, 61-39, early in the second half, but  the Mustangs caught fire and pulled within 80-78 on a 3-pointer by  Streeter McIlravy with 15 seconds left.

Baker hit two free throws with 10 seconds remaining for the final  four-point margin.

Mount Mercy women fall to Baker

The Mount Mercy women's basketball team lost to Baker, 69-62, in a  Heart of America Conference game at the Hennessey Recreation Center  Saturday.

The Mustangs trailed by a single point, 43-42, entering the fourth  quarter, but they could not get enough stops in the final period for  the victory.

Chailey Cabalis scored 15 points for Mount Mercy (2-8, 1-6). Sofia  Popp contributed 14 points and Brianna Thomas had 13 points.

Abby Bird and Taylor Smith scored 18 points apiece for Baker (5-6 2-6).

Kudumovic named MMU women's soccer coach

Mount Mercy Hall of Famer and NAIA all-American Alen Kudumovic has  been chosen to lead the women's soccer program at Mount Mercy,  Athletic Director Paul Gavin announced Thursday. Kudumovic will assume  the role Dec. 16.

"It's my pleasure to welcome Alen back to Mount Mercy," said Gavin.  "His commitment, dedication and passion for the sport of soccer, along  with his love for this university, is a winning combination that will  strengthen our women's soccer program and support efforts to ensure  quality student-athlete experiences in sport and academics."

Kudumovic graduated from Mount Mercy in 2003 with a degree in business  administration and earned a masters in strategic leadership from the  university in 2018. While pursuing his graduate degree, he served as  the graduate assistant coach for the Mustang men's soccer program from  2016-18.

Mustangs foiled by Mo Valley, 114-104

MARSHALL, Mo. - It's hard to lose a basketball game when you make  seventeen 3-pointers and pour in 104 points, but the Mount Mercy  Mustangs found a way Saturday.

Mount Mercy lost to Missouri Valley, 114-104, in a Heart of America  Conference shootout that did not feature a whole lot of defense.

Davarea Loggins popped in eight 3-pointers and scored 24 points for  the Mustangs, who were 17 of 35 from 3-point land Saturday. Bailey  Basala made five 3-pointers and scored 23 points.

Royshawn Webb finished with 16 points, seven assists and five  rebounds. Davion Watson contributed 11 points. Christian Reischauer  had seven assists to match Webb.

Alonzo Williams scored 25 points for Missouri Valley (7-5, 4-3).  Darrell Watson and Tavious Brazil netted 19 points apiece.

Mount Mercy rally falls short

MARSHALL, Mo. - The Mount Mercy women's basketball team staged a  furious rally in the fourth quarter Saturday, but time ran out on the  Mustangs.

Mount Mercy lost to Missouri Valley, 68-64, in a Heart of America  Conference game on the road.

The Mustangs trailed by 22 points after three quarters, 55-33, but  they pulled within two points at 66-64 with six seconds left on a pair  of free throws by Brianna Thomas.

Mount Mercy sent Missouri Valley to the foul line with five seconds  left and the hosts cooperated by missing both of their free throws,  but Missouri Valley grabbed an offensive rebound after the second  errant foul shot and was fouled again with three seconds left.

This time, Shanelle Tolley cashed both free throws to make the final  score 68-64.

Mount Mercy outscored Missouri Valley, 31-13, in the fourth period.

Sofia Popp scored 24 points for Mount Mercy (2-7, 1-5). Thomas  finished with 11 points and Sandra Mia scored 10. Popp contributed  eight rebounds and four steals. Mia had six steals.
