Faur shines as Mustangs sweep

Jake Faur pitched a one-hitter for five innings Sunday as Mount Mercy  defeated Missouri Valley, 14-5, in the second game of a Heart of  America Conference doubleheader at the Plaster Athletic Complex.

The Mustangs won the opener, 8-6, to sweep the doubleheader, raising  their records to 8-8 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

Faur struck out seven batters and walked only one during his five  shutout innings. Missouri Valley scored four runs in the top of the  sixth against a relief pitcher, but the Mustangs had an 11-0 lead by  then thanks to a 10-run uprising in the third inning.

Nick Sueppel went 3-for-3 with four RBIs in the 14-5 verdict in the  nightcap. Cael Lambe was 3-for-3 with two doubles and scored three  runs. Michael Barbato was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs for the  Mustangs. Spencer Wiskus and Chase Costa had two RBIs.

Collin Shrader was 2-for-3 with two doubles and scored twice in the  8-6 victory in the opener. Lyle Fini was 2-for-2. Joshua Neyens scored  three times. Chili Moseley scored twice.

Eagles face No.1 NIACC in regional finals

MASON CITY - The Kirkwood Eagles will face top-ranked NIACC in the  championship game of the women's regional basketball tournament Sunday  at 1 p.m. in Mason City.

Kirkwood enters the regional finals with a 29-3 record, with two of  the losses to NIACC (31-1).

The fourth-ranked Eagles earned a spot in the championship game by  topping Southeastern, 78-59, in the semifinals Saturday. Kirkwood led  37-32 at halftime, then used an 8-0 spurt to begin the third quarter  for a 13-point cushion at 45-32. The lead grew to 23 points midway  through the fourth quarter.

Kemara Watson shot 8-for-9 from the field and led the Eagles with 20  points. Paige Bradford was 8-for-10 and netted 17 points.

Ertz shines at NAIA track meet

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Andrea Ertz of Mount Mercy enjoyed a strong  performance at the NAIA indoor track championships in South Dakota  Saturday.

Ertz finished third in the women's 1000 meter run in 2:54.42 and  placed sixth in the mile run in 4:59.32.

Luke Nickelson of Mount Mercy placed seventh in the men's triple jump  at 48 feet, 3/4 inch. Vanessa Cortes of Mount Mercy finished ninth in  the women's 5000 meter run in 17:56.44.

Armendano powers Mount Mercy spikers

MARSHALL, Mo. - Julian Armendano delivered 18 kills Saturday as the  Mount Mercy men's volleyball team swept Missouri Valley, 25-22, 25-15,  27-25, in a Heart of America Conference match.

The Mustangs have captured 11 straight contests, raising their records  to 16-5 overall and 9-3 in the conference, good for second place.

Nikola Stoimenov contributed nine kills. Ben Ruggles had 33 assists.  Tiago Almeida made 12 digs. Strahil Svilenski blocked six shots.

KCC baseball sweeps Lewis & Clark

GODFREY, Ill. - The Kirkwood baseball team broke into the victory  column Saturday by sweeping a doubleheader from Lewis and Clark, 9-2  and 14-2.

The twin-killing lifted the Eagles to 2-4 for the campaign.

Brook Heinen went 4-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs in the 9-2  victory in the opener. He also scored twice. Josh Fitzgerald was  3-for-5 with two triples in the leadoff spot and scored three times.

Kyle Moeder belted a home run and drove in two runs in Game 1. Evan  Paulus also had two RBIs.

Luke Llewellyn pitched six strong innings for the victory. He was  touched for two runs, but both of them were unearned. He struck out 12  batters and walked four.
