Kernels doomed by their own mistakes
The 3,329 fans that attended “Wedding Crasher Night" at Veterans Memorial Stadium heard both bride and groom say “I do” during a pre-game wedding ceremony, but in the end the happy couple may have been just about the only people on the field Saturday that did not strike out.
The Kernels and visiting Burlington Bees combined to fan 25 times as the Bees withstood a late Cedar Rapids rally to edge the home team, 7-6.
In a precursor of what was to come on the night, Kernels losing pitcher Josue Montanez (1-3) struck out the side in the first inning, but those three strikeouts were scattered among two Bees hits and two Kernels infield errors, all of which resulted in three unearned runs for the visitors before the home team got to pick up a bat.
The Kernels pulled within 3-2 with a pair of runs in their half of the third inning.
