IGHSAU bestows top honor on Tom Keating

Standing just off the volleyball court at the packed Cedar Rapids Ice Arena Wednesday night, with several hundred screaming Saints fans filling the seats behind him, Xavier Principal Tom Keating couldn’t help but marvel at how the sport has grown since he first got in the game.

With 40 teams from five classes competing in the state tournament this year for the first time, it’s the largest field ever.

Keating, the most decorated volleyball coach in Iowa history during his 24 years at Dubuque Wahlert, remembers the 1970s in the game’s infancy when six teams played for the state title in small gyms passed from one high school to another.

Moms helped these Saints love volleyball

Sarah Homan and Kelsey Boyer are excited about playing for the Xavier Saints at the state volleyball tournament Wednesday night at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

They began playing the game in grade school and have come a long way as athletes. And they both expressed similar thoughts Tuesday before practice.

Kirkwood falls at John Wood, 70-56

QUINCY, Ill. - The Kirkwood Eagles fell behind John Wood Commmunity College by 14 points in the first half Tuesday night and never caught up.

John Wood clipped the Eagles, 70-56, in their non-conference game in Quincy, Ill.

Freshman J.C. Fuller led Kirkwood (1-2) with 10 points. He was the only Eagle to reach double figures.

Persick helps boot Saints to semifinals

Ryan Persick has been kicking a ball for as long as he can remember, but it was always a soccer ball.

Football came later.

"I think it was my freshman year," he said Monday. "They needed a kicker, so I came out. And I was pretty good."

Actually, "pretty good" is putting it mildly.

Bohannon glad he waited at UNI

CEDAR FALLS - Matt Bohannon was not thrilled about taking a redshirt year with the University of Northern Iowa basketball team last season.

Not at first, anyway.

"To say I wasn't disappointed, I'd probably be lying to myself," he said.

Now the Linn-Mar grad is glad he did.
