Kirkwood makes NJCAA volleyball tourney

IOWA FALLS - The Kirkwood Community College volleyball team earned a free trip to Toledo, Ohio on Saturday.

Toledo may not be the vacation capital of the world, but that's where the NJCAA Division II national tournament will be held Nov. 15-17.

The fourth-ranked Eagles defeated No. 10 DMACC, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20, in the regional finals to reach the national tournament for the second time in three years.

Xavier enjoying banner year in sports

These are exciting times at Xavier High School.

The football team has reached the semifinals of the Class 4A playoffs and will take a sparkling 12-0 record into its game against Cedar Falls Friday night in the UNI-Dome.

The volleyball team has qualified for the Class 4A state tournament and will face top-ranked Charles City in the quarterfinals Wednesday night at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

The boys golf team tied for eighth at the Class 4A state meet and the boys cross country squad finished 11th at the Class 3A state meet.

Eagles push Indian Hills to limit

OTTUMWA - The Kirkwood men's basketball team gave one of the top junior college programs in the country a real battle Saturday night before falling short.

Indian Hills trimmed the Eagles, 94-89, in a shootout at the Blackwell Tire Classic at the Indian Hills gym in Ottumwa.

Indian Hills is ranked No. 5 in the country at the NJCAA Division I level and has five players who have committed to major four-year colleges. Kirkwood is ranked No. 7 at the NJCAA Division II level and has no major college commitments at this point.

Hughes, Schmeiser pace Metro swimmers

MARSHALLTOWN - Cedar Rapids Washington junior Jackie Hughes collected a pair of individual top-10 finishes at the state swimming meet Saturday at the Marshalltown YMCA.

Hughes placed eighth in the 500 freestyle and finished 10th in the individual medley. She also swam on the 400 freestyle relay that placed 14th.

Kennedy senior Jessica Schmeiser placed 10th in the 200 freestyle and finished 11th in the 100 freestyle. She also swam on the 200 freestyle relay that placed seventh and swam on the 400 freestyle relay that touched in 10th place.

Jacobs has big double-double for Eagles

WEST BURLINGTON - Kianna Jacobs scored 17 points and grabbed 18 rebounds Saturday as Kirkwood drubbed Lewis & Clark, 89-58, at the Southeastern Classic in West Burlington.

The 18 rebounds tied the fifth-most in school history.

"She was just invincible," Kirkwood assistant coach Joe Hruska reported.

Jacobs, a 6-foot sophomore from Milwaukee, also collected three assists and three steals.
