Former Metro preps in pro baseball

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Boston Red Sox) -- Was placed on the disabled list July 31 after undergoing surgery for a broken knuckle on his left pinky finger. He is expected to be out until late September. Year to date -- BA - .260, AB - 204, R - 22, H - 53, RBI - 16, 2B - 19, 3B - 2, HR - 0, SB - 0.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), Midwest League) -- Started in left field Monday and was 0-for-2 in the Loons' 9-0 loss to South Bend that ended the Midwest League regular season. Year to date -- BA - .260, AB - 515, R - 67, H - 134, RBI - 67, 2B - 32, 3B - 8, HR - 6, SB - 17.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), Northwest League) -- Kellen's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth drove in the only run of the game and Vancouver beat Everett, 1-0, in the opening game of the Northwest League semifinals, a best-of-3 series. Kellen was 1-for-4. Vancouver totals -- BA - .229, AB - 245, R - 35, H - 56, RBI - 29, 2B - 15, 3B - 2, HR - 5, SB - 5.

 

Harper goes crazy against Cougars

Crazy, crazy, crazy.

How else to describe a football game that featured 74 points, 794 total yards, 40 first downs and a stunning 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown?

One word. Crazy.

Prairie senior DeMetrius Harper caught 13 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns, and added the kickoff return for a score that led the Hawks past Kennedy, 41-33, Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference non-divisional game at Kingston Stadium.

No. 1 Decorah smothers Marion, 35-0

The Marion Indians clasped hands and walked silently off the field at Thomas Park Friday night after being mauled by top-ranked Decorah, 35-0, at home.

There wasn't much to say, except the obvious.

"They're a great team," Marion senior Ethan Herren remarked after the Indians had reached their buses. "It was a battle in the trenches all night. They were low, they were stronger and they were faster.

Trojans too powerful for Warriors, 62-37

IOWA CITY - Cedar Rapids Washington quarterback Mitch Blades put together a great game on Friday night. The problem for the Warriors, though, was that Iowa City West signalcaller Nate Boland’s performance was a step above great.

Boland lit up the humid air and passed for 340 yards and three touchdowns as No. 6 Iowa City West pummeled the Warriors, 62-37, at Trojan Field.
