Former Metro preps in pro baseball

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Boston Red Sox) -- Was placed on the disabled list July 31 after undergoing surgery for a broken knuckle on his left pinky finger. He is expected to be out until late September. Year to date -- BA - .260, AB - 204, R - 22, H - 53, RBI - 16, 2B - 19, 3B - 2, HR - 0, SB - 0.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), Midwest League) -- Started in left field Saturday and was 2-for-4 in the Loons' 3-0 win over Lake County. Year to date -- BA - .269, AB - 490, R - 67, H - 132, RBI - 66, 2B - 32, 3B - 8, HR - 6, SB - 17.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), Northwest League) -- Started at third base Saturday and was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a double in Vancouver's 8-6 loss to Boise. In his last 34 games Kellen is 36-for-126 and has jumped his average from .163 to .232. Vancouver totals -- BA - .232, AB - 224, R - 31, H - 52, RBI - 29, 2B - 14, 3B - 2, HR - 5, SB - 5.

 

Zach Johnson in good spot at FedEx Cup

One of the famous golf pairings of the season will take place in the second round of the Fedex Cup Barclay Championship again Friday at Bethpage on Long Island.

Zach Johnson steps into the world spotlight with his two playing partners in Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods after a Thursday first round that saw Zach match Tiger's 3-under par 68. While the golf world looks at McIlroy and Woods, Johnson could be in a position to steal the tournament.

In his last 33 games Kellen is 35-for-122 and has jumped his average from .163 to .232. Vancouver totals -- BA - .232, AB - 220, R - 31, H - 51, RBI - 28, 2B - 13, 3B - 2, HR - 5, SB - 5.

It's time to stop hitting your teammate and start pounding on opponents.

The high school football season kicks off tonight in the Metro area and all eight Metro teams are playing.

The schedule features a pair of intracity games and a matchup of two of last year's top teams in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Enyart leads Prairie runners into new year

The girls on the Cedar Rapids Prairie cross country team hope to make great strides this fall. First of all, they'll have to keep up with their new coach.

Corrie Enyart ran a half-marathon in the Twin Cities last year and has a passion for the sport, but this is the first time she's coached a team. "This is a new endeavor for me," she said Thursday before practice.
