Kuba leaves Jeff baseball for softball

Mike Kuba said his gut was aching all day Wednesday after he finally made his decision to step down as Jefferson's baseball coach.

"I still have a gut ache," Kuba said Wednesday night.

But that pain is expected to be eased by the time next spring rolls around and Kuba gets the chance to work with his daughter, Erin, and the Jefferson softball team.

Kuba resigned his post as baseball coach to become an assistant coach on new Jefferson softball coach Brian Erbe's staff.

A peek ahead at the 2012 football season

The Metro high school football season begins this Friday night with a full slate of games.

Former Metro preps in pro baseball

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Boston Red Sox) -- Was placed on the disabled list July 31 after undergoing surgery for a broken knuckle on his left pinky finger. He is expected to be out until late September. Year to date -- BA - .260, AB - 204, R - 22, H - 53, RBI - 16, 2B - 19, 3B - 2, HR - 0, SB - 0.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), Midwest League) -- Started in left field Wednesday and was 1-for-4 in the Loons' 7-1 loss to Lansing. Year to date -- BA - .266, AB - 477, R - 65, H - 127, RBI - 64, 2B - 31, 3B - 8, HR - 6, SB - 16.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), Northwest League) -- Started at third base Wednesday and went 1-for-2 with a stolen base in Vancouver's 11-6 loss to Boise. In his last 32 games Kellen is 33-for-115 and has jumped his average from .163 to .230. Vancouver totals -- BA - .230, AB - 213, R - 28, H - 49, RBI - 28, 2B - 13, 3B - 2, HR - 5, SB - 5.

Kennedy swimmers have lofty goals

The Kennedy High School girls swimming team has big goals this season, but it's hard to get an exact handle on what they are.

It depends on who you ask.

"We're just looking to do our best and be the best in the Metro, to beat Wash and Jeff and Linn-Mar and everybody," senior Jessica Schmeiser said Tuesday.
